Police arrested five war crimes suspects at Batiyaghata in Khulna District on March 2, reports New Age. The arrested were identified as Ashraf Sheikh, Amjad Hossain Hawlader, Atiar Sheikh, Motachchhin Billah and Kamal Uddin Goldar. Prosecutor Sabina Yasmin Khan Munni of the War Crimes Tribunal said the arrested five people were among the eight accused of a war crimes case in Khulna. The five were the members of Razakar Bahini and they were involved in committing crimes against humanity at places in Batiyaghata during the Liberation War in1971, she added.

International Crimes Tribunal1 (ICT1) set April 17 for passing order on charge framing in crimes against humanity case against four alleged Razakars from Moulvibazar District, reports New Nation on March 4. "The threemember tribunal set the date as prosecution and defense concluded hearing in the matter this morning. We have pleaded to frame two charges against them, one for killing 59 and raping six. We also have pleaded to frame second charge for killing two and torturing another one. The investigation officer has recorded testimony of 23 people, of which most are victims or eye witnesses," prosecutor Sheikh Mushfeq Kabir told. Of the four, only Akmal is in custody and was produced before the court. The other three, Abdun Noor Talukder, Anis Miah and Mosabbir Miah are yet to be arrested.

The ban circular said the militant organization’s activities went against peace and order in the country. The radical group was earlier known as Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), which was banned on May 25, 2015, for militant and anti-state activities. It is allegedly responsible for the killing of several secular writers, bloggers and online and gay rights activists critical of religious bigotry.

Two crude bombs were hurled at a prison van carrying Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) chief Mufti Hannan and some of his associates at Tongi town in Gazipur District on March 6, reports The Independent. Police said the prison van came under the attack around 5:30pm while Mufti Hannan and his aides were being taken to Kashimpur jail from a Dhaka court. Two bombs were tossed at the van but those went off on the road missing the target. Police escorting the prison van arrested a young man, Mostafa Kamal (22), from the spot and recovered a bag containing two patrol bombs, two sound grenades, two crude bombs and two machetes. Another attacker fled the scene. The arrested youth reportedly confessed to Police that he exploded the bombs targeting the prison van in exchange for BTK 10,000. However, it was not clear who hired him for the job.

The recovered items are 29 grenades, huge bomb-making materials, including 280 packets of metal balls (each pack contains 100 balls) and 40 packets of explosive gel and nine machetes. Five persons, including a woman and a toddler, were killed in a Police raid on a NeoJama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) den at a twostorey building at Sitakunda in Chittagong District on March 16, reports The Daily Star. When the SWAT members were on the roof of the militant den, three militants charged towards them up the staircase with grenades in their hands. A fourth militant, a woman was right behind the three wearing a suicide vest. The SWAT members went behind their shields and opened fire. Shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’, the three suspects tried to hurl the grenades at the SWAT personnel but they exploded near them and tore their bodies apart. The explosions also inured two SWAT personnel and blew off the corrugated iron sheet roof of the staircase. The woman died after being shot. She fell to the ground before she could blow herself up. This is how the 28minute SWAT operation, named “Assault 16”, ended. Later, the body of a child aged around three to four months just beside the body of the female militant was recovered. None of the suspects was identified.

According to Police, Neo-JMB members Kamal and his wife Arjina, who were arrested alive from Sitakunda, confessed that the top leaders of the militant outfit were moving into secret hideouts set up in areas where Hindu communities lived. The group’s high command has instructed the militants at each hideout that they must conduct as much damage as possible by suicide attacks if busted, they told Police. Two Neo-JMB hideouts busted recently, all fit this description. At the Atia Mahal in Sylhet District, of the 28 families there, 20 are from the Hindu community. In two hideouts in Sitakunda District’s Namarbazar and Premtola areas, many Hindu community people were also living.

The arrestees are Faisal Ahmed Sanil (19), Misbah (19), Mahfuz (16), and Taibur Rahman (18). RAB said that all the arrestees have been involved in militancy for about one and a half years. Police said the militants may have blown themselves up to avoid arrest when Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) teams launched an assault codenamed "Operation Hit Back" on the den. Monirul Islam, Chief of CTTC unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said "Judged by the decomposed condition of the bodies, it seems the militants killed themselves on Wednesday (March 29) when SWAT started the raid in the evening. We think there were seven to eight bodies of people of different age. There were men, women and may be a couple of children. Our crime scene unit is working there. The law enforcers, however, recovered hand grenades, suicide vests and improvised explosive devices (IED) from the hideout. During a press conference after the operation, Shafiqur Rahman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Chittagong Range, said “We are suspecting that the two - Anas alias Anis and Rony - were inside the building. Separately, the autopsy doctor who examined the seven dead bodies from Moulvibazar’s Nasirpur militant den on March 31 was stunned after seeing the gory condition of the bodies, reports Dhaka Tribune. Autopsy team leader Dr Abu Imran of Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital said: “In my 12 year professional career, I have never seen bodies in such condition. We had only half of some of the bodies. For others we had only the heads. I could not stay composed after seeing the bodies of the four children.” The autopsy team leader added that the recovered bodies had been dead for between 24-48 hours. Furthermore, wire and splinters were found on the bodies. The autopsy team said that the smallest child was only three months old, but they could not confirm its gender as only the head was recovered. The other three children were all girls under the age of ten. Among the adults, the women were aged 25 and 35 while the man was aged 35. The man is believed to be the one who detonated the suicide vest.

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) launched an operation codenamed ‘Operation Maximus’ at a militant den in Borohat area of Moulvibazar District on March 31, reports The Daily Star. Counterterrorism officials said there might be four to five militants, including a woman, with a huge stash of explosives at the hideout. One of them is probably an Afghan-trained expert bomb maker, who is known in terror circles as “Boro Bhai” (Big Brother). Whenever the special force tried to close in on the hideout, the militants pushed them back by exploding bombs. There are many rooms in the house and explosives are planted here are there, making the operation complicated.
