Though the Government of Bangladesh has launched a crackdown against militants of North East (NE) using the territory of the country as safe haven, the recent arrests of militants by personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) proved that the militants still have a number of camps and bases in the neighbouring country, reports The Assam Tribune. Highly placed security sources told that the militant groups, particularly the groups of Manipur, still have camps in the Moulvi Bazar area, while, a number of other outfits including the hardline faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) are maintaining camps in the jungles in the Bangladesh-Myanmar border areas. Sources said that the militant groups of North East also have some camps in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) area.

Villagers of South Sohagdal under Nesarabad sub-District in Pirojpur District ransacked the house of a suspected leader of the banned Islamist outfit Hijb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) on June 11, reports, The Independent. The victim was identified as Saidul Islam (45) and a total of 11 persons including women and children were injured in the attack. Villagers told that Saidul Islam and his brother tried to involve the locals in the HuT activists for a long time. On June 11, some villagers asked them not to do that work and a quarrel and a hand to hand fight occurred among Saidul and villagers on the issue. Later excited villagers attacked the house and broke it.

The Police arrested Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leader Mir Kashem Ali on June 17, for his suspected role in perpetrating crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, reports The Independent. Later, he was sent to Dhaka Central Jail, in compliance with the order of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1). Kashem was the chief of Chittagong Al-Badr unit during the Liberation War. Al-Badr was one of the forces created to help the Pakistani occupation army and oppose the pro-liberation forces during the war. Collaborating with the Pakistani army, the Al-Badr killed many and turned many places of Chittagong into killing fields. Kashem, being a member of the Central Executive Council of the Jamaat-e-Islami, also led a propaganda campaign in the UK and the Middle East to foil the ongoing trial of war criminals.

Seven alleged cadres of the banned outfit Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) were arrested in separate drives by Rapid Action Battalion-2 (RAB-2) in Dhaka's Mohammadpur, Hazaribagh and Dhanmondi areas in the last two days, reports The Daily Star. A team of RAB-2 conducted a drive at Mohammadia Housing Ltd in Mohammadpur on June 23 and arrested three HuT cadres. The team conducted two more drives at Jhigatala in Hazaribagh and Dhanmondi on June 24 and arrested four more cadres of the banned outfit. The RAB-2 personnel also recovered a number of books on Jihad, leaflets, a laptop, four personal computers and eight mobile sets from the possession of the arrestees.

The leader was identified as Preeti Khisha Chakma (40) ‘general secretary’ of PCJSS Marung union unit. President of PCJSS- M.N Larma Dighinala unit, Pritimoy Chakma, alleged that Preeti Khisha was shot at around 5.00pm while he was returning home from party meeting held in Marung Bazar area. However, press secretary of PCJSS- Santu Larma, Sajib Chakma, refuted the allegation against his partymen and said that the incident might be a sequel to internal feud in the rival faction.
