Daily Star has reported that Abdul Barik, a close aide of the JMJB leader Bangla Bhai, tortured the victim to death. Mazzal was earlier affiliated to the Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) and had joined the JMJB in April 2004. Following a police raid in January 2005, he had reportedly left the outfit.

According to Daily Star, he was arrested earlier from Rotidanga village and taken to the encounter site for recovery of firearms. An encounter ensued as PBCP cadres opened fire on the security forces (SF) and Younus was killed while trying to escape. Three SF personnel were injured in the encounter. According to official sources, Rahman was arrested from Jotgari village on June 16 and was being taken for recovery of illegal firearms when the security forces were attack by PBCP cadres.
