Prosecution witness Abdul Aziz while testifying before the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) against Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Nayeb-e-Ameer (Deputy Chief) Maulana Abdus Sobhan (77) on June 30 corroborated the charge of killing 10 unarmed people by the Pakistan occupation army at the behest of Sobhan during the Liberation War, reports UNBconnect. Sobhan was arrested on September 20, 2012, by the members of an Army intelligence agency at the Bangabandhu Bridge toll plaza in Tangail District in connection with the case of the 1971 crimes against humanity. After framing nine charges against him he was indicted on December 31, 2013.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed on July 2 said her Government has taken a decision in principle to recruit 50,000 more manpower for the Police Force, reports The New Nation. She said a total of 30,474 new manpower have been added to the Police Force by creating new specialized units in the organizational structures of the force to maintain law and order. Creation for 1,557 new posts is under process. Moreover, a process for constituting a special counter-intelligence unit is going on to contain terrorism. Surveillance has been stepped up through patrolling on highways and river routes round-the-clock and using modern technologies to eliminate terrorism. She further said her Government is following the "zero tolerance" policy to root out terrorism.

Law Minister Anisul Huq on July 4 said that the Government is set to incorporate in the War Crimes Act specific provisions for punishment for organizations, which will pave the way for the trial of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) for its alleged War Crimes in 1971, reports The Daily Star. On July 15, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunals – 1 (ICT-1) termed the JeI “a criminal organization” for its role during the Liberation War. In the wake of pressure from justice seekers for trying the JeI, the Government in February 2013 amended the ICT Act, paving the way for trying organizations for War Crimes.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on July 8 has decided to commence the trial of War Crimes accused engineer Abdul Jabbar, a former Jatiya Party (JP) Member of Parliament (MP), in absentia and set July 20 for a hearing on charge framing, reports Dhaka Tribune. The prosecution on May 11 brought five charges of crimes against humanity including murder, genocide and forced conversion against Jabbar, who had played a key role in forming Razakar force in Mothbaria of Pirojpur District during the Liberation War. On May 12, the tribunal issued arrest warrant against Jabbar, after taking the charges into cognizance. But he is yet to be arrested as he is still fugitive.

Ruhul Amin alias Abdul Rakib Amin, a Bangladesh-born British citizen has been put on a list of people facing sanctions from the United Kingdom (UK) treasury for “terrorism or terror financing”, reports The Daily Star on July 11 (today). Ruhul moved to Aberdeen in Scotland from Moulvibazar District when he was young. Ruhul, who has a British passport, was recently seen in a recruitment video for the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Ruhul was identified as "Brother Abu Bara' al Hindi" in the video, which called for UK Muslims to join ISIS in Iraq. Two cadres of Purba Banglar Communist Party-Janajuddha faction (PBCP-Janajuddha) were killed in separate incidents of ‘shootout’ between their cohorts and Police in Kotchandpur and Harinakunda sub-Districts of Jhenidah District on July 12 (today), reports UNB.In Kotchandpur sub-District, a team of Police conducted a drive at Chatar village. Sensing the presence of Police, the PBCP-Janajuddha cadres opened fire towards them prompting the law enforcers to fire back that triggered a gunfight. Abdur Rashid (30) was killed in the gunfight. An Assistant Sub-Inspector named Nazmul and a Constable were injured during the gunfight. Police recovered a pipe gun and three rounds of bullet from the spot.In Harinakunda sub-District, a group of members of PBCP-Janajuddha were holding a secret meeting at Bishkhali village. When a patrol team of Police was passing through the area, the outlawed party men hurled bombs to them, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a gunfight that left one of them killed on the spot. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. Two constables were injured during the incident. One LG gun, three rounds of bullet and six bombs were recovered from the scene.

The tribunal fixed the date after the prosecution prayed for the former JP leader's indictment, while state-appointed defence pleads to exonerate him from the war crimes charges.Prosecutor Hrishikesh Saha said that Jabbar along with his accomplices forcefully converted 200 Hindus to Islam at Phuljhuri village in Pirojpur District in the last week of May 1971. Two freedom fighters of the village were also killed and Jabbar participated in the killing incident.
