Syed Fahim Munaim, press secretary to the chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, following a meeting of the interim cabinet, said on July 4, "It has been decided in principle that the government would go for expansion by appointing more people to assist the advisers in discharging their responsibilities." The special anti-graft tribunal on July 4 sentenced former state minister for civil aviation, Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin, to 13 years' imprisonment and fined him Taka five million for committing two offences, Daily Star reports. His son, Mir Mohammad Helaluddin, was sentenced to three years in jail for abetting his father in the corruption. Nasiruddin was given 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for illegally accumulating huge wealth and three years' simple jail for concealing information of wealth worth Taka 67268000 in the report he had submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission. Helaluddin was convicted for trying to withdraw and transfer about Taka 56.40 million from their family joint accounts to the accounts of his wife and mother-in-law to help his father conceal property information. The court also directed the government to confiscate their wealth worth Taka 279491000 which is disproportionate to their known sources of income. Defence lawyer M.A. Awal said as per Nasir's instructions they will appeal with the High Court on receipt of the order of the verdict.

During operations in separate villages of Bagmara sub-district in the Rajshahi district on July 9, police arrested a Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militant and four left-wing extremists, including a regional commander of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP). The JMB militant was identified as Shamser Ali, who is also an accused in a police assault case. The arrested PBCP regional commander Ariful Islam Rony is a charge-sheeted accused in a murder case. The extremists were identified as Hazrat of Taherpur, Rashid Babu of Cheukhali and Islam of Polashi village.

Five militants of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), including two top leaders, were arrested in a series of raids by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka and Mymensingh on July 9 and 10, reports Daily Star. The leaders were identified as Asadul Islam alias Arif, a member of JMB's reconstituted Majlish-e-Shura (the highest decision-making body), and Anwar Hossain alias Faruq, a Shura (governing body) member. The others were the outfit’s regional commander for Mymensingh, Shafiqul Islam alias Rakib, Sagar Hossain alias Sayem and Saiful Islam. Arif was convicted in absentia for the killing of two judges at Jhalakathi on November 14, 2005. Six others convicted in the same case, including the outfit’s chief Abdur Rahman and his deputy Bangla Bhai, were executed in different jails on March 29, 2007. Two 9mm pistols with nine bullets, seven computers, a large number of compact disks and books on jihad were recovered from the arrested militants. Hasan Mahmud Khandakar, Director-General of the RAB, told New Age, "We succeeded in breaking the backbone of the banned outfit, but we decided to intensify our drives to nab the outfit’s members who are scattered throughout the country".

Daily Star reports that the court of Metropolitan Magistrate in Dhaka on July 12 granted seven-day remand for Shahida Begum, wife of the arrested Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) Majlish-e-Shura (the highest decision-making body) member Anwar Hossain alias Faruq. The court also ordered police to produce the bullet-hit Hossain being treated at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital before it after his recovery from injuries. On July 10, Faruq was shot during a raid by the Raid Action Battalion personnel and arrested along with his wife from their house in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.

The Election Commission (EC) on July 15 announced its plan for holding the next election to the parliament, reports Daily Star. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), A. T. M. Shamsul Huda, told a press briefing in Dhaka that a voter list with photographs will be ready by October 2008 and the parliamentary poll will be held by December 2008. “Mid October of 2008 will be the latest for having the voter list ready. The election could be held even before December of that year if the voter list gets ready earlier”, he said. He also announced that the EC will start holding elections to different local government bodies from January 2008 in the areas where the voter list will be ready. The CEC also announced that the EC will hold dialogues with political parties on electoral reforms between September and November 2007 with an aim to complete the reforms by February 2008. He further said, “The ban on indoor politics must be lifted. We have decided on the matter after consulting with people of different levels. The government will issue a statement in a few days supporting the roadmap.”

Earlier on July 29, Hasina had filed a petition challenging the legality of the case. She, however, was not released from jail as she has been shown arrested in another case. Three RAB personnel were injured in the encounter. One AK-47 rifle with 67 rounds of bullet, one SMG with 32 rounds of bullet, one revolver, one LG, one single shooter, three rounds of bullet of shotgun and five used shells of AK-47 rifle and three rounds of bullet of .303 rifle were recovered from the incident site. RAB sources said that both the extremists were accused in several cases of different charges including murder filed with Dumuria police station in Khulna and Tala police station in Satkhira district.

The judge also fixed August 14 for starting deposition of the 58 prosecution witnesses. Three people were killed and the Bangladesh-born Choudhury and 70 others were injured in the grenade attack after the Juma (Friday) prayers on May 21, 2004, on the premises of the shrine of Hajrat Shahjalal. The Sylhet Kotwali police filed a case on the same day and arrested nine leaders of the Awami League students' wing-Bangladesh Chhatra League for their suspected involvement in the attack.
