A Dhaka court on February 1 started its trial against 11 alleged militants over killing of eight people during a bank heist in Ashulia, outside the capital Dhaka city in 2015, reports The Daily Star. Ten of the accused, now in jail, were produced before the court while the other is absconding. According to the charge sheet, all the accused are alleged members of banned militant outfits Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).On April 21, 2015, armed militants shot eight people dead and injured several others in Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited in Ashulia, before leaving with BDT 3.5 million.

according to sources in different law enforcement agencies, the Garo Pahar area in Nalitabari sub-District of Sherpur District had become a safe haven for Indian group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), reports The Daily Star. ULFA had been active in the area between 2000 and 2010 under the leadership of its military commander Masud Ranjan Chowdhury. In December, 2010, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered seven abandoned mines, one grenade, 97 bullets, detonators, Indian currency, walkie-talkies, and documents of ULFA. RAB on July 17, 2010, arrested Masud Ranjan Chowdhury and his associate Pradip Marak. On April 8, 2015, the duo were awarded life imprisonments and fined BDT 20,000. They are currently serving their terms in a Kishoreganj prison.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on February 2 sentenced Obaidul Haque Taher (66) and Ataur Rahman Nani (62) of Netrakona District to death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, reports The Daily Star. The court found them guilty in four out of six charges brought against them. It gave them death penalty in two charges; imprisonment until death in two others and acquitted them from two charges. Taher was the commander of Netrakona Razakar Bahini, an auxiliary force of the Pakistan army in 1971, while Nani was a member of that force. The Tribunal said that it is an undisputed and settled fact that 3 million people laid down their lives during the Bangladesh's War of Liberation in 1971.

Freedom fighter Mugamad Abul Kalam, a regional organiser of Liberation War on February 7 filed a case against 25 persons including a sitting Jatiya Party (JP) Member of Parliament (MP) for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, reports New Age. The accused include JP MP from Trishal MA Abdul Hannan, former JP MP from the same constituency Anisur Rahman Manik. Abul Kalam filed the case with the court of Mymensingh Senior Judicial Magistrate -3 for the accused people’s involvement in committing murders of several persons in Kalirbazar and Kanihari areas under Trishal in Mymensingh District on April 21, 1971. Apart from JeI, the other militant groups involved with the network are Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT), Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). Sources said that these groups had established connection with some Myanmar-based terrorist organisations including the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO). “We have tracked down 32 websites where the extremists share their information among the members. From an analysis of the crime scene, Police have concluded that the murder was carried out by JMB. In a retrial, a court in Rajshahi on February 24 commuted the death penalties of two Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leaders to life imprisonment in a case filed for killing Rajshahi University teacher Muhammad Yunus 12 years ago, reports Daily Star. Speedy trial tribunal Judge Golam Ahmed Khalilur Rahman also fined each of the duo Taka 5,000, in default of which they would have to stay one more year in jail, said Public Prosecutor (PP) Entajul Haque, quoting the verdict.Yunus, a professor of economics department, was knifed to death near his Binodpur house, a few yards away from the Rajshahi University campus, on December 24 in 2004. Of the convicts, Shahidullah alias Mahbub is the husband of a niece of executed JMB military commander Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai. The other one, Shafiullah alias Tarek, is the commander of the banned militant outfit in Rajshahi. The judge pronounced the verdict in their presence yesterday noon.

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina Wajed on February 24 asked the authorities concerned to stay alert so that the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres and those involved in terrorist and militant activities could not be recruited in the Police force, reports Daily Star. “I hope the police officials concerned would be more watchful so that the Jamaat-Shibir activists and those involved in terrorist and militant acts and arson attacks could not sneak into a disciplined force like Bangladesh Police,” she told parliament. Replying to a supplementary question from Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari (Chittagong-2), the leader of the House said she does not want to make any interference in this regard. “But it's the duty and responsibility of the police force to look into the matter so that those engaged in terrorist and militant acts and arson attacks, especially during the mayhem unleashed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-Jamaat-Shibir in 2013, 2014 and 2015, could not be recruited in the police.”

Deputy Inspector General Monirul Islam, also chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit said "Three people who participated in Avijit killing were identified. They are on the run. However, we do not have the information about their whereabouts."On February 26, 2015, Avijit Roy, the popular founder of Mukta-mona.com blog, was hacked to death by suspected Islamic extremists in Dhaka city when he and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya were returning from a book fair.
