Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali on April 1 told the International Conference on Prevention of Genocides in Brussels, the capital of Belgium that the International Crimes Tribunals (ICTs) in Bangladesh were set up to end the culture of impunity, establish rule of law, and dispense justice to the victims and their families, reports The Daily Star. The Minister said that the ICT Act, 1973 adheres to relevant international standards to ensure due process and fairness of the trials and rights of the defendants. He highlighted that during the nine-month Liberation War in 1971 “three million Bengali civilians were killed, more than 200,000 women were violated, and 10 million people were rendered refugees. A small minority of ideologically motivated local collaborators and auxiliary forces participated and abetted in committing these mass atrocity crimes.”

The deceased is identified as Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall unit acting general secretary Rustom Ali Akond. BCL blamed Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), for the murder as ICS had been threatening Rustom with life through short message service for the last few days.

17 activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), accused in a case for vandalising shops and vehicles and obstructing Police from performing their duties at Atwary sub-District under Panchagarh District on October 25, 2013, were sent to jail on April 7, reports The Daily Star. BNP-JeI activists brought out a procession at Atwary sub-District on October 25, 2013 as part of the BNP-led alliance's countrywide demonstration to mount pressure on the Government to form a Caretaker Government for holding the 10th parliamentary elections. At one stage, the procession went on the rampage, vandalised shops and vehicles and attacked Policemen at Atwary Bazar. Atwary Police filed a case on that day accusing the BNP-JeI activists.

The High Court (HC) on April 17 acquitted four cadres of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) condemned to death by a Chittagong Court for killing eight persons, including six activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of ruling Awami League (AL) in Chittagong city in July 2000, reports The Daily Star. The HC gave the verdict after hearing appeals by the four accused against the lower court judgment. The charges brought against them were not proved, as none of the witnesses saw them spray bullets at the eight people. On March 27, 2008, Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ekramul Haq Chowdhury handed down the capital punishment to the ICS cadres.

During the closing arguments, prosecutor Mokhlesur Rahman Badal claimed that he had proved all the charges against Khokon “beyond any shadow of doubt”. He further said “We are seeking his [accused] capital punishment.” Khokon, believed to be living in Sweden with his son and daughter, is facing 11 charges for his alleged involvement in killings, genocide, torture, abduction and confinement of people during the Liberation War in 1971.
