More than one million Afghans have migrated over the past four months, most of them crossed border areas into Iran and Pakistan, Tolo News reports on February 5. The head of a private transportation industry said that around 4,000 people are heading to Iran on daily basis. “Every day, we take 3,500 to 4,000 people from here (Kabul) to Kandahar, Nimroz and Herat provinces,” said Ismail Jawanmard Amerkhel, head of a transportation company. “The Afghan refugees in Iran are facing various challenges such as lack of access to work and refugee identification cards. A refugee is always at risk of being back deported,” said Naqibullah Rasikh, a refugee rights activist.

Pentagon concluded the results of an investigation that was conducted over the suicide attack at the entrance of Kabul International Airport that killed 13 United States (US) marines, along with scores of Afghan civilians, during evacuation of foreigners as well as Afghans on August 26, 2021 reveled that a single bomber was responsible for the incident, reports CNN. The US Department of Defense (DoD) said that the attack was carried out by a single suicide bomber carrying out 20 pounds of explosives packed in ball bearings. General Frank McKenzie head of the US Central Command said that based on their tactical level investigation, the attack of 26th August was not preventable and they could not overcome it. Islamic State-Khorasan Province (IS-KP) claimed responsibility for the attack. "At the time, the best information we had in the immediate aftermath of the attack indicated that it was a complex attack by both a suicide bomber and ISIS-K gunmen," he said. "We now know that the explosively-fired ball bearings caused wounds that looked like gunshots, and when combined with a small number of warning shots that led many to assume that a complex attack had occurred."

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) denied the claim made by Pakistan's Interior Minister that Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was using modern military equipment against the Pakistani military that was left over from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)'s presence in Afghanistan, reports Tolo News. Pakistan Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said, “They (TTP) use military equipment remaining from NATO forces. In my opinion, the Afghan Taliban made a large effort to dissuade the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), but they don’t understand. They are settled in Kunar, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Paktia and Khost provinces, which are along the (Durand Line), and they launch attacks against Pakistan. The attacks have increased.” The IEA also denies the presence of any group, including the TTP, on Afghan soil, saying that the Afghan territory will not be used against any country.

The United Nation’ Security Council (UNSC)’s analytical support and sanctions monitoring team in its latest report held that the son of slain terrorist Osama Bin Laden, Abdullah, visited Afghanistan in October 2021 for “meetings” with the Taliban, reports Hasht-e- Subh on February 7. Further, the report also stated that foreign terrorist groups ranging from al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) enjoy greater freedom in Afghanistan than any other time in recent years. Further, the UNSC report, further provides crucial details of Al-Qaeda affiliates and the Islamic State-Khorasan Province (IS-KP), reports The Print. “[Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent] retains a presence in Afghanistan, in the provinces of Ghazni, Helmand, Kandahar, Nimruz, Paktika and Zabul, where the group fought alongside the Taliban against the ousted government. AQIS is estimated to have between 200 and 400 fighters, mainly from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Pakistan.” Also, former IS-KP leader Aslam Farooqi, had “escaped” from an Afghanistan prison and “subsequently rejoined the group in a senior capacity”. Reacting to the report, the Islamic Emirate said the report lacks evidence on February 7, adds Tolo News. “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan strongly rejects recent report by the UNSC Monitoring Team asserting an increase of foreign groups in Afghanistan. The Islamic Emirate deems such reports lacking evidence, documents and addresses neither in the interest of Afghanistan, the region or the world,” the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA)’s Foreign Ministry.

The duo, who were carrying more than £10,000 in cash, military fatigues and night-vision goggles in their bags, were arrested after a tipoff from Uzbekistan, according to a Taliban source with knowledge of the operation. “There was one passport from England and one from another country in Europe,” said the source. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie said, “ISIS [Islamic State in Iraq and Syria]… concerns us in Afghanistan,” Gen. McKenzie further said, “…We know that the Taliban are no friends, particularly of ISIS and in fact over the past couple of years, they have occasionally under-taken operations against ISIS. I think… what we see developing in Afghanistan is ungoverned and under-governed spaces which are areas were ISIS traditionally flourished and… I think there is a risk, we know that ISIS does in fact have ... a desire to carry out external attacks—attacks against the United States-- the homeland of the United States and attacks against the homeland of our neighbors in Europe… and other places. So, I am concerned by what is happening in Afghanistan.”

United States (US) Special Representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, in a special interview, said that no decision has been made regarding the recognition of the Islamic Emirate by the United States, reports Tolo News on March 1. Thomas West also said that the US wants to see a representative government formed in Afghanistan and the commitments made to the international community upheld. Further, West said the US is concerned about the possible increase in Daesh (Arabic acronym for Islamic State) and Al-Qaida activity in Afghanistan, and stressed that Daesh is the shared enemy of Kabul and Washington, and the US wants the Islamic Emirate to succeed in suppressing Daesh. “We haven’t made a decision on recognition. We want to see this practice of the detaining of women--and in particular detaining of women protesters--we want to see that end resolutely. And those are ongoing areas of conversation,” he said.
