On December 4, 13 civilians and one security force (SF) personal were killed in a SF operation in place between Oting and Tiru village under Mon District of Nagaland, reports The Hindu. According to Police sources, the firing incident took place when a group of labourers onboard a pick-up vehicle was on its way from Tiru village. Following the inputs about Yung Aung faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Khaplang (NSCN-K-YA) militants in the area, SFs mistakenly fired at the vehicle thinking as the occupants as militants.Six civilians died on the spot. Meanwhile, the incident enraged the locals who attacked the troops and set two of their vehicles on fire. In self-defence, SFs fired at the locals, killing seven civilians and one SF. Meanwhile, the Army’s 3 Corps headquartered on the outskirts of Dimapur town issued a statement on December 5, owning responsibility for the killing of the civilians and assuring “appropriate action”. The Nagaland Government has ordered a high-level probe into the incident by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
