During the search operations conducted in the area, the SFs recovered dead bodies of 32 militants along with a large cache of arms, ammunition and vehicles. At least 40 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants were killed and 35 others wounded as the troops captured Valayarmadam area of No Fire Zone (NFZ) in Mullaitivu District on April 26. The 58th Division troops rescued nearly 2,000 civilians bringing the total number of civilians rescued by the troops to 111,000, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told Daily News. The troops took full control of Valayarmadam, located six km north of Vellamullivaikkal, the last terrain held by the LTTE inside the NFZ. With the capture of Valayarmadam, the LTTE has been restricted to a narrow six km stretch in Karaiyamullivaikal and Vellamullivaikkal where the outfit continues to keep thousands of civilians under its detention. According to Nanayakkara, 23 militants also surrendered to the Army as troops advanced into Valayarmadam. The Security Forces (SFs) have now commenced advancing further south of the NFZ amidst stiff resistance from the LTTE, said a senior military official. The number of civilians rescued by the Army since April 20 from LTTE grip in Puttumatalan NFZ by the evening of April 26 rose to 111,512, according to a Sri Lanka Army report (SLA).

The SFs later recovered dead bodies of all the slain 45 militants. Earlier, the SFs had recovered 21 dead bodies of the militants along with 60 T-56 weapons from the area. The General Officer Commanding the 58th Division, Brigadier Shavendra Silva, told Daily News that some more militants are fighting inside the one square kilometre terrain as they have no chance to escape from the area. He also said there were strong indications that LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran and senior leader Pottu Amman were inside the terrain. In addition, troops engaged in search and clear operations recovered a bullet proof limousine confirmed to have been used by Prabhakaran close to a luxury air-conditioned bungalow inside the terrain. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that the luxury bullet proof car was recovered along with four more burnt cars closer to the luxury house. "Losing Tiger cadres, having lost all hopes for a last-minute salvation, have vandalized and set ablaze all the five cars, including the chauffeur-driven limousine, believed to have been used by top-rung Tiger leaders," the Brigadier added.

More than 1000 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed in the intense fighting in the Mullaittivu District since February 1, the pro—LTTE Website Tamil Net quoted LTTE sources as saying on February 6. Hundreds of SLA crack commandos were drawn into Mannakandal and Keappaapulavu 'boxes' and were cut off from their rear supplies during a pre-emptive strike by the LTTE, resulting in the death of these soldiers. An arms storage, which was full of weapons as the SLA was in full preparation to launch its 'final assault' on Puthukkudyiruppu was also seized by the LTTE commandos engaged in the pre-emptive strike, the report added. The sources further revealed that there were at least 20 mortars, thousands of shells, several hundreds of assault rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), RPG launchers and a conservative estimate of one million rounds were among the arms and ammunitions seized. The LTTE had emptied the store of stockpiled arms and ammunitions by the time the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombed the location of its own arsenal, sources added further.

Troops advancing towards Kilinochchi captured the key Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) garrison of Paranthan in the morning of January 1 following hours of fighting that killed over 50 militants, according to Colombo Page. Defence authorities said the battle for Paranthan began two days ago when the troop’s armour, artillery and infantry battalions launched a concerted assault on the militants holed up in the strategic town. Troops, supported by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), entered Paranthan in the morning of December 31 and reportedly encountered stiff resistance from the LTTE. Troops have also cut-off the vital access routes towards Paranthan along the Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) road from North and South, the military said. Troops are now consolidating defences and advancing further east of the Paranthan junction, security sources said. Defence sources said capture of Paranthan would open up access routes to the remaining LTTE defences at Vaddakkachchi and Puthukkudiyiruppu areas on the Paranthan-Mullaitivu (A-35) road and isolating another LTTE stronghold of Elephant Pass located between the Jaffna peninsula and Kilinochchi.

At least 100 persons were killed in artillery exchanges between military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the last one week, an unnamed Government official working in the area controlled by the LTTE said on January 22. "Around 30 people died in the morning today. Personally I saw that nearly 100 people have died from Saturday [January 17] up to today. Sukumar, who spoke from Mullaitivu, is in charge of Government services in the LTTE-held area, said, "When people occupy particular places, the LTTE send shells from that area, and then army also targets the same area. So people cannot escape from the shelling." As reported earlier, the pro-LTTE Website Tamil Net on January 22 claimed that 66 civilians were killed and more than 200 wounded in Sri Lanka Army’s artillery fire within the last three days in Mullaitivu District. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara denying this said, "Today we stopped firing and took 46 patients from that hospital through the Red Cross, so that kind of humanitarian operation is underway. We didn't fire into the safe zone because we wanted civilians to come." At least 150 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants were killed during fierce fighting with the troops inside the No Fire Zone (NFZ) in Mullaitivu District on May 17, reports The Hindu. Troops operating in the western edge of the Nanthikandal lagoon foiled an attempt by the LTTE militants to escape towards the jungles in Mullaitivu and Puthukkudiyiruppu south killing more than 80 militants, including nine female cadres, who tried to breach the Security Forces’ (SF) defences in the morning of May 17. “More than 80 well trained Tiger cadres were killed and their bodies were recovered collected from the Nanthikandal lagoon as troops foiled the Tigers’ attempt to breach the Security Forces defence around 2.30 am yesterday,” military officials in Mullaitivu told Daily News. The attempt to breach the SF’s defences came after launching four LTTE boats into the Nanthikandal lagoon from the NFZ whilst hundreds of other militants crossed the lagoon to reach the western edge of the lagoon. Troops repulsed the attack killing several militants and destroying boats heading towards the SF’s defences. According to intelligence sources, Sea Tiger (sea wing of the LTTE) leader Soosai and Jeyam had briefed the militants before they launched the attack and their aim was to open a path towards the Mullaitivu jungles for their leaders to escape from the safe zone. "Their aim was to establish a foothold on the eastern bank of the lagoon. If they were successful they would try to transfer their most senior leaders there and try their luck in the jungles", a senior military official said, according to Defense.lk. He further revealed that the LTTE has lost their last remaining fighting cadre in this abortive attack, saying, "The attack was completely crushed by the well prepared soldiers. It is just a basic military tactic to show an escape route for the surrounded enemy as bait and crush them when they take it." The Website also said that two senior LTTE militants, identified as Muttappan and Pradeep, were also killed during the confrontation.
