The LTTE alleged that at least 61 school children were killed and 150 injured in an aerial attack by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in the outfit-controlled Mullaittivu district. However, the Government claimed that the SLAF attacked a LTTE training camp in Puthukudirippu and killed more than 50 LTTE cadres. "It is a lie to say that schoolchildren were targeted. The Air Force had bombed a LTTE training centre. We don't know if they had moved child soldiers there," said Government spokesperson, Chandrapala Liyanage. However, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), whose team visited the affected school in Vallipunam on the Paranthan-Mullaithivu road, confirmed that students had died in an attack. "Yes there is an incident and our team counted 19 bodies of girls and boys in the premises. We believe the death toll of 61 is accurate. However, we are not in a position to comment on what could have exactly happened", a spokesman of the SLMM told Hindu.

At least sixty-four civilians, including 15 children, were killed and eighty-six others were injured when a state-run passenger bus carrying 150 passengers was destroyed in a twin side-charger claymore mine explosion in the Anuradhapura district on June 15. The Government's spokesperson on security issues, Keheliya Rambukwella, blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the attack saying, "There is no iota of doubt that it is the LTTE." He also said, "There is no declaration of War, the peace agreement is on, but, we have to look at it very seriously", adding that the Government would not hesitate to take military action if needed, to safeguard the civilians. Subsequent to the attack, security forces (SFs) carried out an aerial attack in the LTTE-held Sampoor and Maullativu area and drooped bombs near the outfit headquarters of Kilinochchi on June 16, today. However, no casualties were reported in these incidents. Meanwhile, the LTTE denied its involvement and blamed the Government for the attack. Reacting to the SFs aerial attack, head of the outfit’s peace secretariat, S. Puleedevan, told Reuters, "If they are attacking Kilinochchi, they are showing they are ready for war."

Six Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres and eight sailors were feared killed, when a boat heading to northern Sri Lanka and carrying LTTE cadres exploded off the northwest coast on March 25 near a naval craft, a military spokesman said. The boat, believed to be carrying explosives, was approached by a Naval Fast Attack Craft to carry out an inspection when it exploded in the Kalpititya region, 200 km north of capital Colombo, informed Brigadier Pradsad Samarasinghe. People aboard are believed to have detonated the vessel to avoid detection, he said. The naval craft sank and 11 sailors were rescued. A search operation for the sailors was in progress, but they are presumed dead, the navy said. "The suicide-style explosion carried out by the crew of the trawler causing damage to a naval vessel and claiming the lives of Navy personnel is a violation of the cease-fire," the Government said in a statement. However, the LTTE denied any involvement in the incident. "We never engage in any offensive operations against the Sri Lankan army and navy," S. Puleedevan, head of the LTTE Peace Secretariat, told Reuters by satellite telephone from Kilinochchi. "There is no (Tiger) connection to this attack," he claimed.

At least 50 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) personnel, including seven officers, were killed and another 214 were injured in continued fighting between Government troops and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at the Muhamale and Kilaly Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) of security forces (SFs) since October 10-night, according to SLA reports. The Defence Ministry said, "Troops are consolidating their positions after fierce gun battles that lasted for over five hours. Intermittent fighting however still rages on. Ground troops confirmed that a large number of terrorist dead bodies were also found scattered around their forward defence lines. Troops were compelled to launch those defensive measures as a result of the increased bout of LTTE violence against members of the Security Forces, disrupting the regular opening of the A-9 Highway." A senior military officer told The Hindu, "The number of soldiers killed is higher but we are not updating the casualty figure at the moment. The military has suffered high casualties because it did not anticipate such resistance from the Tigers."

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) destroyed a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) trawler, transporting weapons, ammunition and explosives, about 35 nautical miles in the seas off Arippu West in the Mannar district, killing six of the outfit cadres on October 15. Three SLN personnel sustained injuries in the incident. The Government Media Center said that the SLN after detecting a suspicious trawler fired warning shots, adding, “Instead of heeding the warning shots, the trawler fired back, injuring three fishermen in the former trawler and also compelled the Dvora to fire back, resulting in the trawler exploding.” Military spokesperson Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said, "We suspect the destroyed vessel was transporting a large cache of arms since there were huge blasts from inside the vessel before it blew up. The trawler was heading towards the Silavathura area in Mannar," adding, "Six on board the suspicious vessel were reportedly killed and three sailors sustained injuries in the encounter."

At least 98 sailors of the navy were killed and 100 injured on October 16 as suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a naval convoy in Habarana, according to The Hindu. The toll is likely to increase as several of the injured are reportedly in a serious condition. The massacre occurred at the entry point to east and Trincomalee district. The Defence Ministry said LTTE terrorists rammed into the naval convoy at Digampatana in Habarana around 1.30 p.m (SLT). The military said, "A huge explosion has occurred causing severe destruction to both naval personnel and the civilians in the area." The convoy comprising 24 buses was at the Digampatana rendezvous point when the attack occurred. The Ministry said over 340 unarmed naval personnel were believed to be present at the location. Naval sources said 13 buses had been damaged. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Secretariat of President Mahinda Rajapakse said the incident was yet another example of the LTTE's cowardly use of extreme violence against unarmed services personnel. "The suicide truck attack at Habarana was in a civilian area away from the area of armed confrontation. This was further proof of the LTTE's unmitigated commitment to violence to achieve its ends and was in total disregard of international demands for it to abandon violence and seek peaceful means to achieve its goals," he said.

Witnesses said the battle continued all night and hundreds of civilians sought refuge in schools and churches. The defence ministry said five of the LTTE boats had been suicide vessels laden with explosives. The navy said 20 LTTE boats had attacked a patrol near the Kankesanturai harbour, adding that two Government boats were slightly damaged and two sailors wounded. Meanwhile, the Kankesanturai harbour is reportedly cut off from the rest of the country by LTTE lines. The Sri Lankan Navy and Air Force in a coordinated attack on September 17 sank a suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) ship carrying weapons off the island's northeastern waters. Officials said the Navy spotted the unnamed vessel about 125-kilometres off Kalmunai in the Batticaloa district and ordered it to proceed to Trincomalee port for a search. An air force patrol craft was called in to bomb the ship when it ignored orders and opened fire on the navy. The Defence Ministry said in a statement, "When ordered by navy patrol craft to sail towards Trincomalee for checking, the suspected vessel opened fire. Tigers during the recent past were desperately trying to acquire weapons and ammunition from foreign countries, yet those moves were countered by law enforcing authorities in those countries and many Tiger inmates were arrested." Unconfirmed reports suggest that 12 to 15 LTTE cadres were on board the ship, when it sank.
