The Sri Lankan government said that monitored Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) transmissions claimed that the rebels were on the periphery of the Iyakachchi military base, ‘the last bastion protecting the Elephant Pass camp’. The Sri Lankan Army was forced to pull back from several defence lines in the face of the LTTE offensive. While 56 LTTE rebels and 21 soldiers were killed, 213 soldiers were reported injured in the clashes on April 20.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have gained control of the strategic Elephant Pass, on April 22. Heavy fighting between the LTTE and government troops continued north of the Pass, where the troops are now concentrated to prevent the LTTE from marching towards Jaffna, which they had lost to the Sri Lankan Army in 1996. The Defence Ministry said that troops resisted the LTTE offensive, killing 197 LTTE rebels and injuring several hundreds during the last few days. The Ministry claimed that 150 LTTE cadres were killed on April 22, and 12 on April 23 morning. During clashes on April 23, government forces claimed the loss of seven officers and 72 soldiers. Among those killed were a Brigadier and two Colonels. Some 420 security forces personnel were injured in the intense clashes. LTTE sources however put the Army toll at a higher figure of 1000.

Further, 75 LTTE rebels were believed to be trapped in the area. The LTTE, however, held that it had killed over 100 government troops and had injured more than 300. While the LTTE claimed that it had destroyed two tanks, the Defence Ministry said that government troops had destroyed a tank ‘that was bogged down’ and admitted that the LTTE had damaged two armoured tanks in RPG and artillery fire.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) were bombarding each other’s positions near A9 highway, since the morning. The SLA's operation, code named Welikathra, came under heavy resistance when Tiger rebels made a fresh attempt, on April 4, to advance towards Muhamaalai, the LTTE claimed. The SLA lost an additional kilometer of territory near Muhamaalai in a fierce counter-attack by the Tigers .The government claimed that 30 Tigers were killed in the battle at Muhamaalai. The Tigers claimed that 60 government troops were killed in the offensives. The LTTE also claimed that they were pushing further into the Jaffna peninsula and that its Special Border Force and Border Force units were playing a prominent role.

Only two kilometres of the road remained in the control of the Tigers according to official sources. While the (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam) LTTE said that the forces of the Sri Lankan army were bogged down and in fact attacks on Eluthumadduval and Pallai, south east of Jaffna, were counter-attacked and repulsed. According to late reports, 11 government soldiers were killed on April 6, in a fresh initiative launched to recapture a strategic highway (Main Supply Route, MSR) from Tamil Tiger rebels. Backed by helicopter gun ships and artillery, Army troops wrested control of more than three kilometres (1.8 miles) of the strategic A-9 highway in the Jaffna peninsula. The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) forces resisting this attack, used RPG fire to damage and destroy two T-63 armoured personnel carriers. 190 soldiers were wounded during the fighting.

The attack destroyed the whole consignment, but 21 of the 28 crew members were rescued. The attack commenced on June 26 in the wee hours and lasted for eight hours, on the high seas off Point Pedro. The LTTE, however, contradicted the government’s claims and held that the ship was carrying arms and ammunition. Further, it said a gunboat was also destroyed in the attack. According to the LTTE, 10 Sri Lankan navy personnel and six Black Sea Tigers, the suicide cadres of the LTTE’s naval wing, one of who was a self-styled Lieutenant Colonel, were killed in the incident.

Investigators suspect that the main target of the LTTE was Deputy Defence Minister General Anuruddha Ratwatte, who was to travel back home from Parliament. Besides, two Tiger cadres were also killed and another suicide cadre blasted himself in Colombo in the incident. It is still not known how many of them were involved in the incident. Following the explosion, 28 persons including eight policemen were killed and 74 persons were injured. The Army had recovered five rocket propelled grenade launchers, five T-56 weapons and grenade shells from the incident area. A top-level joint Army-Police investigation has been launched.
