The cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) shot dead a tribal man after branding him a ‘Police informer’ at Burdamaha village of Latingia panchayat (village level local self-government institution) under K. Nuagaon tehsil (revenue unit) in Kandhamal District of Odisha on January 2, reports The New Indian Express. The deceased has been identified as Ranjan Digal, a resident of Mardudi village within Baliguda Police Station limits in the District. As per the sources, a group of about 8 to 12 armed Maoists reached the village in late hours of the night and broke into his house and dragged Ranjan out. The Maoists took him to a local school and shot him dead. The Maoists also left posters near his body in which the Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of the CPI-Maoist claimed responsibility of the killing. The posters also said that Ranjan was killed as he worked as ‘Police informer’.

On January 8 night, a special Sub-Inspector of Police, Wilson, was shot dead by two suspected Islamic State (IS) terrorists at Padanthaalumoodu checkpost in Kanniyakumari District of Tamil Nadu, reports The Hindu. The killers were identified as A. Abdul Shameem of Thiruvithaancode (Kanyakumari District) and M. Thoufique of Malik Dinar Nagar in Kottar (Kanniyakumari). Following the killing, the duo reportedly fled to Kerala as captured by CCTV footage. The killers were reportedly involved in the murder of Hindu Munnani activist, KP Suresh Kumar, in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in June 21, 2014. India Today adds that the absconding killers of Wilson are old associates of three IS terrorists arrested in Delhi on January 9, 2020. The duo along with Khaja Moideen, Syed Ali Nawaz, Abdul Samad and Jaffar Ali fled to different places after killing Hindu Munnani activist KP Suresh Kumar.

Armed cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) shot dead a civilian in Tuti Jharna village under Gomia Police Station limits in Bokaro District of Jharkhand on January 24, reports The Telegraph. The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Manjhi (60), a resident of Pindra village in Gomia Block (administrative unit) in the District. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Anjani Anjan, Manjhi was a Munshi (Clerk) of a contractor who is engaged in constructing a road from Pindra to Tuti Jharna village under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). As per the sources, the Maoists barged into the said village and set ablaze a JCB machine, one tractor and one motorcycle engaged in road construction work near the contractor’s camp and assaulted labourers. After this, they dragged Manjhi out of the camp and shot him dead. Before fleeing, the Maoists left posters stating their disapproval over the construction of the road and dictated the contraction firm to stop the work. The posters also alleged that the State Government was constructing the road to loot minerals from the area.

A journalist, Javedullah Khan, who was also a local leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and member of the peace committee, was shot dead in the Shakardara area of Matta tehsil (revenue unit) in Swat District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on February 25, reports Dawn. According to Police, Javedullah Khan was going to his fields in his car when some unidentified assailants opened fire on his vehicle, leaving him seriously wounded. He was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment. A Police guard of the journalist who was with him in the car remained unhurt. According to details, the incident took place in front of Civil Hospital where Zubair was severely injured by the firing of unidentified motorcyclists. Later he succumbed to his injuries. BRA claimed the responsibility of the attack. A doctor belonging to the Ahmadi community was shot dead while his father and two uncles were injured when a teenage boy opened fire on them in their home in MurhBalochan area of Nankana Sahib District in Punjab on November 20, reports Dawn.Police said the Ahmadi family were offering prayers on Friday afternoon at their house when they heard a knock on the door.One of the family members, Dr Tahir Mahmood (31), went to open the door where a teenage boy carrying a pistol opened fire on him. The victim suffered bullet wounds and fell on the ground, while his family members rushed to the door on hearing the gunshots. The suspect also opened fire on them and injured Dr Mahmood’s father, Tariq, and uncles Saeed and Tayyab. Residents of the area subsequently nabbed the attacker. Saddar Sanghla Station House Officer (SHO) Muhammad Shamshair said that the suspect confessed to having attacked the family over religious differences.
