The Afghan Taliban officially announced on January 18, that they would not hold any meeting with the US Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad in Islamabad, reports The News.“We want to make it clear that we will not hold any meeting with Zalmay Khalilzad inIslamabad,” Taliban 'spokesman' Zabihullah Mujahid said in a brief statement released to the media. Senior US officials, including Zalmay Khalilzad, former US Ambassador and their representative for Afghanistan, are presently in Pakistan for the past two days and want Pakistan to arrange their meeting with the Afghan Taliban in Islamabad. There has been a deadlock in peace talks after the two sides reportedly developed differences over agenda of the meeting. The Taliban representatives claimed that they had initiated peace talks with the US to discuss and resolve some of the basic issues first. However, they claimed that in the last meeting that took place in Abu Dhabi in December 2018, the US asked them to announce a two-month ceasefire and also include the Afghan Government in peace talks.According to the Taliban sources, it was decided to hold another meeting in the second week of January 2018 in the Saudi capital city of Riyadh. The Taliban claimed thatthey had chosen their representatives for meeting in Saudi Arabia but then all of a sudden, Saudi Arabia made it conditional that the Taliban leadership would need to announce a two-month ceasefire, which they rejected and announced their boycott of peace talks there.

The U.S. envoy for Afghan peace Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad reacted to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s remarks regarding the formation of interim government in Afghanistan, The Khaama Press reports on March 26. “While #Pakistan has made constructive contributions on the #AfghanPeaceProcess, PM Khan’s comments did not. The future of #Afghanistan is for #Afghans, and only Afghans, to decide. The role of the international community is to encourage Afghans to come together so they can do so,” Ambassador Khalizad said in a Twitter post. The Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan had earlier suggested an interim government setup in Afghanistan to help end the impasse in Afghan peace process. The Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on April 25 said Pakistan will not be party to any internal conflict in Afghanistan anymore, reports Daily Times. Describing the ongoing peace efforts ‘a historic opportunity for peace in the region’, PM said Pakistan was fully supporting the reconciliation process in Afghanistan. “Afghanistan conflict has brought great suffering for both Afghanistan and Pakistan over last 40 years. Now, after a long wait, the Afghanistan Peace Process presents a historic opportunity for peace in the region and Pakistan is fully supporting the process including the next logical step of Intra Afghan Dialogue wherein Afghans will themselves decide upon the future of their country,” he said in a statement. Khan further added “In this backdrop, Pakistan is highly dismayed by the surge of violence in Afghanistan from all sides. The so-called offensives are condemnable and will undermine the peace process. It is not right to seek an edge in dialogue through coercion.” “Pakistan implores all parties to recognize the importance of the moment and seize it. Pakistan has committed all diplomatic and security capital to success of peace process. Pakistan will not be party to any internal conflict in Afghanistan anymore,” the statement added.

Afghan Taliban on July 25 said that they will visit Pakistan whenever they received a formal invitation, as they routinely pay visits to regional and other countries to explain their position regarding peace process and to address to others’ concerns, reports Daily Times. Comments from Suhail Shaheen, Taliban political office spokesman in Qatar, came days after Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan said in Washington he will meet the Taliban leaders in Pakistan on his return to convince them to hold negotiations with the Afghan government. “We pay visits to regional and other countries for talks to explain our position on peace process and to listen to others. Pakistan is our neighbor and a Muslim country. Members of our political office will travel to Pakistan if we receive a formal invitation from Pakistan,” Shaheen said when he was asked about PM Imran Khan’s remarks. The Taliban spokesman said the visit could take place in the coming weeks.

Warning that the Kashmir crisis could get worse, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Asad Majeed Khan on August 12 raised the possibility that Islamabad might redeploy troops from the Afghanistan border to the Kashmir frontier, a shift that could complicate American peace talks with the Taliban, now said to be in the final stages, reports Daily Times. In an interview with the New York Times editorial board, Majeed Khan emphasised that the Kashmir and Afghanistan issues were separate and that he was not attempting to link them. On the contrary, he said, Pakistan hoped the American talks with the Taliban would succeed and that Islamabad was actively supporting them. “We are doing all that we can and will continue to do so,” Ambassador Khan said. “It’s not an either-or situation.” Nonetheless, the Pakistani envoy said that India’s crackdown on Indian-held Kashmir as it annexed the state “could not have come at a worse time for us”.
