Zahir further disclosed that such incidents will be closely monitored and investigated. This comes at a time of public outrage following a video of a Maldivian citizen advocating for the right to leave Islam and defending apostates began circulating on social media during the past week. The Director of SITE Intelligence Group, Rita Katz, on April 17 revealed that the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the arson attack Mahibadhoo in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll through its Al Naba weekly newsletter, reports IBT on April 17.Rita Katz's tweeted, ISIS stated that the boats belonged to the "Apostate Maldivian Government and its loyalists" and were destroyed using "incendiary bombs." Earlier, Maldives Police Service (MPS) announced on April 15 that the harbour fire incident at Mahibadhoo in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll was a deliberate act of arson, reports Edition. Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed stated that the incident which took place at 0522 hrs on Wednesday (April 15) morning during the early hours was “clearly a deliberate act". Four speedboats, a sea ambulance, and two dinghy's docked adjacent to each other at the harbour went up in flames in the fire. Two of the burnt speedboats belonged to a private company, while one was a police launch and the other owned by the Alifu Dhaalu Atoll council. CP Hameed also said that the Police were looking into leads that the arson attack was carried out as an act of retaliation against authorities for recent investigations into drug trafficking and religious extremism.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) on April 29 declared that the February 2020 attack on foreigners in the suburb of Hulhumalé was as an act of revenge carried out by terrorists, reports Edition. On February 4, 2020, unidentified masked men on motorcycles assaulted the victims, two Chinese nationals and an Australian, with knives near the Hulhumale' Redbull Park Futsal Ground. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz confirmed that investigations into the stabbings revealed that the act was carried out in retaliation against authorities over the counter-terrorism operation "Asseyri", conducted in Maduvvari Island in December 2019. A total of eight individuals were arrested in relation to the stabbings in Hulhumale'. "Four people actively participated in assaulting the three foreigners. The motorcycles [used in the assault] and the motorcycle license plates used for the cover-up were recovered during the investigation", Assistant Commissioner of Police stated. Riyaz added that the electronic devices found during the raids in the homes of the accused contained information related to the attacks, and material supporting terrorism.

Maldives Police Service on April 29 informed the media that their investigation has not unearthed any substantial evidence linking the extremist organisation, Islamic State (IS), to the Mahibadhoo harbour arson case, reports Edition. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mohamed Riyaz revealed that the five speedboats and two dinghies docked at Mahibadhoo Island in Alif Dhaal Atoll were set ablaze by a group of people that arrived at the island via a dinghyusing bottles filled with flammable substances in the early hours of April 15. The Police recovered one such bottle in the lagoon during the investigation. ACP Riyaz noted that the investigation revealed similarities between the Mahibadhoo case, the police speedboat set ablaze at Gan in Laamu Atoll on March 22, and some other arson attacks. No arrests have been made as of yet. However, ACP Riyaz disclosed that the Police inspected five residences of suspects and collected digital evidence.

Police have announced that intelligence received of a possible terrorist attack being planned in Maafushi Prison under Kaffu Atoll has been foiled by a pre-emptive raid, reports Sun Maldives on April 30.The raid was to stop a possible attack that was communicated between inmates and people on the outside. The inmates had been imprisoned in connection with recent terror attacks in Male' City. Intelligence was received by the authorities that the inmates were planning to carry out an attack by outsiders that could disrupt the safety and security of the country.Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mohamed Riyaazon April 30 stated that the intelligence has led to Police raiding the prisonjointly with Maldives Correctionsled to the seizure of mobile phones, USB, and chargers. “Some of communication devices used for the purpose has been confiscated. Details of the case can only be provided after analyzing the devices,” said ACP Riyaaz.

In a meeting committee member and Hulhumalé constituency Member of Parliament Ali Niyaz called to probe the matter, given that the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office has said that they had not decided against pressing charges against the suspects. He added that monitor and control(monicon) orders were issued against some of the suspects. In their statement, the commission further assured that its work is ongoing. According to Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Mohamed Nasheed cited the Commission's letter and said the commission has only been able to investigate cases and gather evidence that can only incriminate those physically involved in carrying out the murders. However, there is not enough evidence to press charges against those who funded the hits, said Nasheed. According to Nasheed, the commission said its work was interrupted due to a draft report it sent to the parliament on a case they were investigating being made public. Nasheed said the people whose identities were mentioned on the draft report should have been charged despite any interruption.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations, Mariya stated that there were hidden factors fuelling the protests, led "using the term human trafficking" and banking on delayed salary payments. The Chief of Defence Force, Major General Abdulla Shamal stated on July 21, that the recent violent protests by the expatriate workers in Maldives are equivalent to that of foreigners taking over the nation, reports Edition. Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations, Shamal stated that 250,000 expatriates live amongst the Maldivian population of 500,000 locals. Out of these, he stated that 179,954 were registered while the remaining 66,000 were undocumented. According to Shamal the large expat population in Maldives has threatened the sovereignty of the state. There were at least two such protests, at Bodufinolhu in Baa Atoll and Hulhumale, in July 2020.

Maldivian Authorities on August 3, claimed that Yasir Yahya, a Yemeni citizen who died in state custody while undergoing treatment after a two-month long hunger strike, was linked to international terrorist organisation Al Qaeda, reports Edition. According to a joint statement released by Maldives Immigration, Maldives Correctional Service and Maldives Police Service, Yasir played a key role in the terror group; Yasir had completed various high-level terrorism training programmes, had also overseen Al Qaeda's activities in many countries including Yemen. Further, Yasir had, during his stay in the island nation, developed close connections with Maldivians who were investigated by Maldives Police Service in terrorism-related offences. Yasir Yahya had gone on a lengthy hunger strike this year and was admitted at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in the capital Male on July 21, for treatment. However, he passed away from a stroke.

India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka agreed on November 28, to enhance intelligence-sharing to tackle common threats such as terrorism, drug trafficking and money laundering as the three countries revived their maritime security cooperation dialogue after a gap of six years, reports Hindustan Times. The meeting in Colombo, attended by India’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, Maldives’ Defence Minister Mariya Didi and Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne, also decided that working groups at the level of deputy NSAs will meet twice a year to bolster cooperation at the operational level. A joint statement issued after the dialogue said the three sides exchanged views on common security threats and “agreed to broad base cooperation by expanding the scope to improve intelligence-sharing and include issues like terrorism, radicalisation, extremism, drugs, arms and human trafficking, money laundering, cybersecurity and effect of climate change on the maritime environment”.
