The BSF seized a consignment of arms and heroin along the IB near the Chamliyal border outpost in Samba District on January 3, reports Daily Excelsior. The consignment was found packed in a white-coloured sack hidden in sarkanda (wild grass) near the Chamliyal border outpost. The officials said the seizure included three AK rifles along with five magazines, four pistols along with seven magazines, five packets of heroin and some assorted ammunition. The sack was noticed during patrolling, the officials said, adding that it had the markings of “Karachi Fertilizers Company Limited”.

On January 5, a suspected drug peddler identified as Jahangir Alom was injured in police firing while attempting to evade arrest in Saidaria in Rupohihat Police Station (PS) area of Nagaon District in Assam, reports Assam Tribune. Alom who was also wanted in at least three dacoity cases initially threw stones and attacked Police with stick in order to escape from arrest. It was at this moment he was shot at his leg. Alert Army troops recovered a consignment of nearly 31 kilograms of narcotics near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 21, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said the Security Forces (SFs) received some inputs regarding smuggling of narcotics from across the LoC and launched relentless operation in the forward area. During search operation, narcotics weighing nearly 31 kilograms was recovered hidden close to the LoC, which was believed that consignment had been smuggled from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) side. The security agencies have also picked up few suspects in this connection for questioning.

The drug peddler was arrested along with a large quantity of narcotic substances from Dhubri town. Later on, while leading the Police to nab his accomplices, he tried to escape by assaulting an on-duty Policeman. In retaliation, Police shot at and injured him. A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was injured in an exchange of fire with Pakistani smugglers during a cross-border drug smuggling bid along the Indo-Pak border in an area under Border Outpost (BOP) Chandu Wadala in Gurdaspur District of Punjab on January 28, reports Daily Excelsior. The BSF foiled the cross-border drug smuggling bid and during the search operation, 47 packets of heroin and seven packets of opium were recovered, the BSF said. Besides, a Chinese made Norinco pistol with two magazines, 9 mm Pietro Beretta pistol with one magazine, 74 rounds of AK-47 with four magazines, 44 rounds of 0.3 calibre and 12 rounds of 9 mm were also seized by the BSF. A 15-feet-long plastic pipe was also recovered from the spot.

Two accused, Alim Mohammad Akhtar and Chhota Md Nasir have been arrested. The accused are remanded in ATS custody till February 15. It was revealed in the initial investigation that a person from a neighbouring state was the supplier of the seized contraband. His modus operandi was to supply the drug in a secret chamber created in a new pair of shoes. The two arrested persons along with their third partner were operating from a rented apartment in Vasai. From there, the accused were further supplying the narcotics drugs to the traffickers in Mumbai. Further investigation in the case is underway.

During routine checking at Chenad crossing, a joint team of officials from the Police and the Army intercepted a truck with two persons on board. During search, 800 grams of heroin like substance was recovered from the said vehicle. Both the persons were identified as Nisar Ahmad Khan and Mohammad Rafiq Khan. “Police, along with security forces, busted an inter-district Narcro-terror module by arresting two terrorist associates in Baramulla and recovered heroin worth ₹1.5 crore, arms and ammunition from their possession,” said a Police spokesman. A release on May 4 said the highway patrolling unit of the Kohima Police of Nagaland, during routine checking and frisking of vehicles at Peducha, intercepted one suspicious vehicle (Maruti Gypsy) and recovered 49 packets of suspected heroin weighing around 615 grams from it on May 3. The contraband valued at INR 30 million in the international market was found hidden in a specially modified compartment of the vehicle, Nagaland Police said. According to DRI statement, an intelligence input was received about certain consignments imported from Iran were likely to contain narcotic drugs. The DRI launched ‘Operation Namkeen’ and a consignment declared to containing 1,000 bags of common salt imported from Iran was identified for probe, the DRI said in a statement. After a three-day long investigation from May 24 to 26, some bags were found to be suspicious as a substance having distinct smell was found from them. The officials of Directorate of Forensic Sciences conducted the tests and reported the presence of cocaine in these samples.

The BSF further said that on the intervening night of May 30 and 31, the Coast Guard and Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) Gujarat Police seized a Pakistani boat near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) between Sir Creek and Jakhau Port and detained seven people, all Pakistani nationals, aboard the boat. During this operation, the boat's crew dumped the drugs in the sea, added the BSF. The contraband was kept concealed in a container of unstitched clothes using a cardboard pipe, which was further camouflaged by an oversized plastic pipe. The container, which was loaded from Jebel Ali port in the UAE, was booked by an importer from Malerkotla. Following specific intelligence input regarding the smuggling of heroin from the UAE to Punjab, the State Police in a joint operation with the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), Gujarat, and central agencies seized 75 kilograms of heroin from a container at Mundra Port, said Punjab, Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav on July 12. State Investigating Agency (SIA) on October 19 conducted raid on the premises of a woman, the alleged lynchpin of a narco-terror network, in Sopore area of the Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. “In a month-long chase of elusive leads to identity the lynchpin of a dangerous narco-terror module, SIA finally zeroed on to a woman who has overseen at least Rs 10 crores worth narcotics and drugs smuggled into India from Pakistan,” a spokesman of the agency said. The recovery was made in a joint operation of the Punjab Police and the Border Security Force (BSF). "Carrying on the special drive against trans-border smuggling networks, Tarn Taran Police and BSF, in a joint operation have recovered a quadcopter drone with 3 kg heroin during a search in an area of PS Valtoha, Tarn Taran," said Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav in a tweet. This comes a day after the BSF recovered about 25 kilograms of heroin, which was airdropped by a Pakistani drone in the Fazilka District on December 3.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG), in a joint operation with Gujarat Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), apprehended a Pakistani boat, Al Soheli on December 26 with 10 crew in Indian waters carrying arms, ammunition and approximately 40 kgs of Narcotics worth INR 300 crores, reports The Print. Ahmedabad Mirror adds that they were caught off Okha coast. According to official statement, “During the intervening night of 25/26 Dec 22, on a specific intelligence input, ICG strategically deployed its Fast Patrol class of ship ICGS Arinjay for patrolling in an area close to the notional International Maritime Border Line (IMBL). During the early hours of Monday, 26 Dec 2022, a Pakistani Fishing Boat Al Soheli was observed moving suspiciously in Indian waters”. The statement also mentioned that this was the seventh joint operation by ICG and ATS, Gujarat in the last 18 months and the first apprehension wherein arms and ammunition along with drugs were being infiltrated. “During the mentioned period, a total 346 kgs of heroin worth Rs 1,930 crores has already been seized along with apprehension of 44 Pakistani and 7 Iranian crew,” statement said.
