National Investigation Agency (NIA) has clarified that the accused in the diplomatic channel gold smuggling case had formed a terrorist group recruited people for smuggling gold to the state, keralalkaumudi.com reports on February 3. It also stated that Swapna Suresh and Sarith were also part of this gang. This information was mentioned in the charge sheet led by the NIA in the Special Court in Kochi on January 5. According to the charge sheet, the gold smuggling, which has been going on since 2019, was aimed at undermining the country's internal security and financial stability. The terrorist group was formed to smuggle gold. They worked to help each other. 167 kg of gold was smuggled through the diplomatic channel. The operation was carried out knowing that large-scale smuggling of gold would be detrimental to national security and economic security. The accused also tried to sever friendly relations between India and the UAE. The charge sheet was prepared after a detailed investigation into the terror links of the accused. The NIA has found that money that was collected from home and abroad was turned into gold which was then smuggled to India. The money collected selling this gold in India was smuggled back as 'reverse hawala'. The money was used to buy and smuggle gold again. The accused were also charged Section 20 of the UAPA due to their terrorist links.

Over the last few days, Delhi Police and NIA investigators, who were informally associated with the probe till now, have collected information about certain social media channels, including a Telegram entity which had claimed responsibility for the blast on behalf of a group called ‘Jaish ul Hind’.

While probing an Islamic State-inspired module, the agency recently found that an Instagram channel named “Chronicle Foundation” was being used by elements located overseas to spread propaganda and recruit people. The group had more than 5,000 members. NIA has identified several members from India, who were allegedly in touch with operatives based in Syria, Iraq and Africa, besides the IS-Khorasan (Afghanistan) based handlers. They were instigated to join the outfits and also raise funds for them. Some of the members had even made unsuccessful attempts to travel to Afghanistan via Iran in April 2019.

The other person arrested was identified as Gagandeep Singh of Phagwara in Kapurthala District. According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, the Kapurthala Police recovered two hand-grenades, a box of detonators, two tubes suspected to containing RDX, a roll of wire used in explosives, INR 375,000 Indian currency, a licensed pistol, 14 Indian passports, a .30-calibre pistol and two magazines from Gurmukh’s house. Also, Police seized a tiffin bomb, three hand-grenades, four Glock pistol magazines and packaging material from the Gurmukh’s office near Jalandhar bus stand. Reportedly, Gurmukh has been working for a local vernacular newspaper. In the draft charges filed before a special court in Mumbai, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has said that the accused in the Elgaar Parishad-cum-Bhima-Koregaon riots case had recruited students from various universities, including the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Tata Institute for Social Sciences (TISS) for terror activities, reports The Pioneer on August 24. The NIA stated in the draft charges filed before the court of Special Judge D E Kothalikar last week, “...you accused no 1 to 10 along with the wanted accused no 17 to 22 being the active members of the banned terrorist organisation CPI (Maoists) and its frontal organisations recruited students from various universities, including Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Tata Institute for Social Sciences (TISS) for commission of terrorist activity.” The alleged recruitment of the students of JNU, TISS and other universities is one of three fresh revelations that have been made by the NIA in its draft charges which will be formalised and formally framed against the 22 accused in the much-discussed sensational case. The other two new revelations are: the NIA – which had earlier said that the accused in the case had conspired to wage a war against the Government of India – has for the first time said that the accused had also conspired against the Maharashtra Government. “The accused no 1 to 10 along with the deceased accused number 16 (Father Stan Lourduswamy of Tamil Nadu who died in Mumbai while in custody on July 5, 2021) and absconding accused 17 to 22 being the active members of the banned terrorist organisation CPI (Maoists) and its frontal organisations had conspired wage a war against the Government of India and the State Government..,” one of the draft charges said, adding that they conspired to overthrow the governments at the centre and in the state (both BJP). One of the draft charges throws up the connection of Nepal and Manipur. “For the purpose ( of waging the war against the Government of India and the state government) conspired to demand and organise Rs 8 crore for annual supply of M-4 (sophisticated weapon) with 4,00,000 rounds and other arms and ammunition through a designated supplier from Nepal and Manipur and conspired to overawe the Government of India and State Government by means of criminal force, show of criminal force, thereby committed the offence punishable under section 121 A of the Indian Penal Code,” another charge in the draft charges said.

Recent killings of civilians in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has brought back into focus similar methods used by Khalistani terrorists to destabilize Punjab, and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated probes this month in two such cases – firing on a priest, Kamaldeep Sharma, and sewadar (volunteer) Simranjit Kaur – on January 31 this year in Phillaur, seriously injuring them, and killing of a dera follower Manohar Lal in Bhatinda on November 20 last year, reports Hindustan Times on October 24. In both the cases taken over on October 8 by the NIA, it looks to investigate a pattern behind targeted killings in both Kashmir and Punjab. In Punjab, the gunmen were given pistols on the directions of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Canada-based ‘chief’ of banned outfit Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), investigators suspect. The shooters, identified as Lovepreet alias Ravi, Kamaljit Sharma and Ram Singh, targeted prominent persons of other faiths “to create a sense of fear and disharmony in the society,” the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said while handing over the two cases to the NIA. In April, the NIA filed charges against eight members of another outfit called Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) for the murder of Balwinder Singh Sandhu, a Shaurya Chakra bravery award winner, in Tarn Taran District in October 2020. “Islamic or Khalistani outfits in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, operating with the help of Pakistan army and the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence, the Pakistani spy agency), have found this modus operandi more useful to them,” an official said, requesting anonymity. “The local operators, who act as hitmen, are provided with guns easily available within India or smuggled from across the border, for which money is paid through Western Union money transfer or hawala (informal money transfer). The specific targets are selected by handlers and these operatives are asked to attack and flee.”

The Jharkhand Police arrested Prashant Bose aka Kishan Da aka Nirbhay aka Kajal aka Buddha aka Maneesh (80), carries a bounty of INR 10 million, is part of the National Investigation Agency (NIA)’s most wanted list, and has been an ideological fountainhead of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) for over five decades, from the Kandra area in Seraikela Kharsawan District of Jharkhand on November 12, reports Hindustan Times. According to reports citing the State Police, his wife, Sheela Marandi, was arrested along with him. Marandi is also a senior member of the Maoist cadre; the only woman in the ‘central committee, CC’, the foremost operational organization of the Maoists; and spent over a decade in jail in multiple cases in Odisha and Jharkhand before she was released from a Rourkela prison in 2016. Kishan Da, for four decades until a change in the Maoist leadership in 2018 -- when Nambala Keshava Rao aka Basavaraju took over from Muppala Lakshman Rao aka Ganapathy as ‘general secretary’ of the banned CPI-Maoist, Bose was largely considered the second most senior Maoist in the country. “When Basavaraju took over from Ganapathy, the idea was to make the leadership a little younger. So both Ganapathy and Prashant Bose took a back seat, but they are clearly the two biggest Maoists India has seen of the past three decades,” a senior intelligence officer said. NIA records describe Bose as five-foot-six, say that he “keeps a light beard to hide a twisted left cheek”, has “false teeth”, is “fond of tobacco”, and wears “bifocal specs”. The investigative agency also shows Bose as a member of the CPI-Maoist ‘politburo’, its highest political body, a member of the ‘central committee, CC’, a non-permanent member of the Central Military Commission (CMC), and secretary of the Eastern Regional Bureau (ERB), which oversees all Maoist activities in seven States including Jharkhand and West Bengal. “[He] reportedly stays in the Saranda forests (Jharkhand). Can be regarded as the No. 2 man in the CPI(Maoist),” the NIA records read.

Arvind Negi, whose residence in Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, was raided simultaneously as the NIA carried out searches at the residence and offices of noted activist Khurram Parvez on November 22. “The probe began after an intelligence input that the details of investigation into crucial cases were being shared with (Pakistan’s) ISI by the officer concerned," an unidentified security official said, adding that the allegation is that Negi passed on the investigation's case diary to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
