Two cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) carrying cash rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads, were arrested from Kirandul Police Station limits in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 3, reports Pioneer. The two cadres identified as Lachhu Kunjam (40) and Kosa Uika (35) were arrested based on intelligence inputs, by a joint of team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local Police, said a Police Official. While Kunjam was active as the head of DAKMS (Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangthan- a frontal wing of Maoists), Uika was a ‘Jan Militia Commander’. The duo was allegedly involved in setting ablaze six trucks, two bulldozer machines and a poclain machine engaged in works related to the Screening Plant number 3 of the NMDC in its Bailadila iron ore mining region on November 24 last year, the Official said adding that they were mainly tasked with arranging the meeting of villagers for Maoists, spreading Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] propaganda and conducting recce on movement of Security Forces (SFs).

Two cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were arrested from a place near Palna dam in Chandil town in Seraikela Kharwsawan District of Jharkhand on January 3, reports The Telegraph. The arrested duo, identified as Mangal Topno alias Lallu and Soyana Singh Sardar alias Mota are members of CPI-Maoist squad headed by Mahraj Pramanik. Both were involved in the killing of five Policemen at Khukru Haat under Tiruldih Police Station limits in the District on June 14, 2019. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Karthik S. said, “We had received a tip-off about the presence of Mangal and Soyana in the said locality. A special team rushed to the spot and arrested the duo by surrounding the entire area last evening.”

Seven cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were arrested in separate incidents in Latehar District of Jharkhand on January 5, reports The Telegraph. The arrested cadres were allegedly part of the team that ambushed and killed three home guards and an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) ranked Official of Latehar Police at Lukaiya More on NH 39 under Chandwa Police Station limits in the said District on November 22, 2019. The cadres are said to be associated with dreaded Maoist – Ravindra Ganjhu and have been identified as Baijnath Ganjhu, Kunwar Ganjhu, Rajesh Ganjhu, Sunil Ganjhu, Faguna Ganjhu, Sanjay Ganjhu and Naresh Ganjhu. They were arrested following an intelligence input that the rebels had come to collect levy from a contractor on behalf of Ravindra. First, the Police tracked down three rebels at Saroj Nagar in Chandwa block of the District. The arrested trio spilled the whereabouts of four more who were arrested later on from an unspecified location the District. The Police recovered forty live bullets that the rebels had looted from the Police, blood-stained pouches and clothes of the Police including three Aadhaar cards, three bikes, INR 500,000 which the rebels had collected as levy from a contractor named Sonu Singh in the said block.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) couple wanted in several violence related incidents was arrested from Addaru Veedhi village in Gudem Kotha Veedhi Mandal (administrative sub-division) in Visakhapatnam District of Andhra Pradesh, reports The Times of India on January 9. The arrested duohas been identified as Bellam Narayana Swamy alias Damodar alias Azad (58), a native of Tatimarri in Anantapuram District of the State and his wife, Gangi Madhi alias Poolbatti (51), both were last serving as Special Zonal Committee (SZC) members. Damodar was the Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) member and had an INR 2 million on his head and was also involved in more than 100 cases. Poolbatti on the other hand carried a cash reward of INR 600,000 on her head and was involved in more than 20 cases. Damodar had joined CPI-Maoist in 1980, and worked in Nallamala from 1990 to 1997,and later was shifted to Andhra Odisha Border (AOB) area in 1998. He was reportedly part of several attacks on Police Stations including attacks on Eleswaram Police Station (1998), armedPolice outpost at Darakonda (2000), Kalimela Police Station (Odisha in 2001), Anakapalle andChodavaram Police Stations in 2002 and attack on armed Police camp in Koraput (Odisha) in 2004.Poolbatti joined the Maoists in 1991. She worked in Kalimela squad and was wanted in landmine blast in Kalimela village in Malkangiri (Odisha in 2008) andexchange of fire with Police at Rajulakonda in 2010, along with several other cases in the twoStates.

A ‘Jan Militia (people's army) commander’ of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Deva Muchaki was arrested by Security Forces (SFs) from Aalnaar village under Kirandul Police Station limits in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh in India on January 12, reports Devdiscourse. As per the report, Deva Muchaki was arrested during a joint search operation by a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local Police. A Police official said, “Muchaki is a ‘Jan Militia commander’ and has been with the CPI-Maoist for a decade. He was wanted for an attack in 2012 on a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) team in Kirandul in which six security personnel and a civilian were killed”. The official also added that Muchaki was part of a Maoist squad which set ablaze nine vehicles and machinery engaged in construction activity at the NMDC's Bailadila iron ore mine on November 24, 2019.

A cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) carrying a cash reward of INR 100000 on his head was arrested by Security Forces (SFs) during an intelligence-based operation in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 16, reports The Pioneer. The arrested cadre has been identified as Muchki Masa (30), a resident of Jagargunda village in Sukma District. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallav said, “Muchki was President of Maoist DKAMS (Dandakaranya Kisan Adivasi Majdor Sangh), and was arrested by a joint team of security personnel consisting of Special Task Force (STF)-16 camp in Aranpur village and Aranpur Police Station staff”. According to Police, Muchki was involved in setting up a live wire in Aranpur wherein one security personal was injured in October 2018. He was also a part of the Maoist team that had detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and opened indiscriminate fire on a Police party in Sameli Kurum Nullah in September 2019.

As per the report, on receiving a tip off about the presence of the PLFI cadres in the said forest, the Security Forces (SFs) had launched an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation. As soon as the SFs reached the forest, cadres of PLFI fired shots at them leading to an exchange of fire. "The exchange of fire lasted for about 20 minutes, resulting in the extremists fleeing from their camp. We have arrested a rebel and our interrogation is on to ascertain his identity and his involvement in extremist activities," said the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Pranav Anand adding that SFs recovered a 9mm pistol, a single barrel gun and a few cartridges, besides items of daily use from the PLFI camp.

As per the sources, the three arrested persons have been identified as Akhilesh Yadav and Ajay Yadav, both brothers and residents of Aurangabad District of Bihar; and Mithilesh Yadav, resident of Lesliganj block in Palamu District. The trio was supposed to deliver the memory card to Maoists either in Saranda in Jharkhand or Chhakarbandha in Bihar. Police said the chip was handed over to Akhilesh by Ajay who got it from Mithilesh. A huge quantity of explosives was recovered from a trader suspected to be linked with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Gopalpur village under Rambha Police Station limits in Ganjam District of Odishaon January 29, reports Hindustan Times. As per the report, on receiving a tip-off, a team Special Task Force (STF) raided the house of the trader identified as, Saroj Patnaik and recovered 196 quintals of ammonium nitrate, which had 99 per cent purity and was exclusively meant for industrial purposes, 3,200 gelatin sticks and 10,406 detonators. Following the recovery, the trader was arrested. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of STF, Jai Narayan Pankaj, said, “This is one of the largest hauls of explosives in recent times. Though the accused was apparently trying to sell the explosives to local quarry owners, we are trying to find out if the accused was in contact with Maoists. The seized materials can be ingredients for the landmines that Maoists assemble.”

Combined teams of the Police's District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local Police conducted raids in Kirandul, Dantewada and Geedam, rounding up nine suspects including seven minors, he said. Two of them were identified as Sodhi Bhima (29) and Sodhi Nanda (20), who were part of "action teams" of Maoists while three girls were members of the rebels' `Jan militia', Pallava said. Remaining four minors were released as they were found to have no connection with Maoists, the SP said. Bhima and Nanda, carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh each on their heads, were allegedly involved in the killing of a villager in Nilawaya forests on January 31, planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to target SFs in Potali area during the recent Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) polls, and attacks on Police and CRPF personnel, the official added. Maoist literature, a detonator and 100 gm gun powder were recovered from their possession, he said. The three ‘Jan Militia’ (Maoists people’s army) members, aged 12-17 years, were allegedly involved in reconnaissance of SFs and planting explosives and iron spikes to target them, Pallava said. Maoists had planned attacks in view of 110th anniversary of `Bhumkal revolt' (rebellion by tribal farmers in Bastar region against British rulers in 1910), between February 4 to 10. The arrested cadres belonged to ‘Maharaj Pramanik squad’ of CPI-Maoist, and were identified as Sagar Mahto, Jagdish Mahato, Abhishek Kumar Sinha and Gunlal Mahato. He had been working as a courier to the Maoist leaders Haribhushan, Damodar, Azad and Sudhakar for the past three years. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Shailesh Balkawade, “the two were living as companions and had strayed out of the movement in September 2019. Srimathi a native of Sringeri Taluka (revenue sub-division) in Chikkamagaluru District of Karnataka. Police sources said that Srimathi was traveling along with another woman whose identity is yet to be ascertained from a TNSTC (Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation) bus, from Kerala to Karnataka via Coimbatore. According to a Police Official, Srimathi was a member of Kabani and Bhavani Dalam (armed squad) of the CPI-Maoist. The arrested cadres were identified as Madakam Bhima, Madakam Anda, and Madakam Malla – all residents of Timirigudem Usoor block in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh. According to a Police Official, the trio joined CPI-Maoist in 2008. While Bhima was a ‘Grama Rakshana’ Dalam (armed squad) member, Anda and Malla were members of ‘Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sanghatan’ (DAKMS). According to sources, a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were out on a combing operation in the said area while they were fired upon by the Maoists. The Security Forces (SFs) retaliated leading to an exchange of fire forcing the Maoists to flee. However, the SFs could arrest two Maoists, identified as Chetram Veko, a key operative and Sudram Veko, a ‘militia platoon commander’, both carrying a cash reward of INR 100,000 each on their heads. The SFs also recovered half-a-dozen country-made firearms along with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), five kilograms of pressure cooker bombs and directional bombs.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sundarraj P. said, while two persons were arrested last month, five others were held recently by the Kanker District Police. On March 24, Police arrested Tapas Palit, a construction contractor while he was allegedly transporting a huge consignment of shoes, fabrics and walkie-talkie sets, meant for Maoist rebels, from a place under Siksod Police Station limits of Kanker District. Following Palit’s arrest, another person, identified as Dayashankar Mishra, who was associated with him, was also arrested from Rajandgaon District. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Nabi Miya alias Master (35), carrying a cash reward of INR 700,000 on his head was arrested from a weekly market at Manjhaladih more in Giridih District of Jharkhand on April 18, reports The Pioneer. According to the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Deepak Kumar, on receiving a tip-off about the movement of the hardcore Maoist in the said weekly market, a special team of Dumari Police and 154th Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was dispatched to the spot and arrested him. Nabi Miya has been acting as a section commander of the military company of Mithlesh Mahto, which is active in Giridih, Bokaro and Hazaribagh division. Nabi was involved in the killing of former Bagodar MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) Mahendra Singh in the Chotanagpur region of the District on January 16, 2005. The ASP further said that Nabi Miya was wanted in connection with more than 15 incidents of Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE]-related violence in the District. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on May 1 arrested an absconding property manager, identified as Manoj Chaudhary, from Hooghly District of West Bengal in connection with a case of arms seizure from Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Jharkhand, reports Outlook India. An NIA spokesperson said that Chaudhary, who allegedly acted as a property manager in Jharkhand, was arrested and incriminating documents showing transactions in immovable properties were seized from his possession. The NIA had registered the case against Maoists in May 2018 after a huge cache of arms and ammunition were seized from Akbakitand village in Giridih District of Jharkhand in March 2018. The NIA official said that investigation revealed that Chaudhary was an active member of CPI-Maoist and was instrumental in the investment of proceeds of terrorism like extortion or levy money collected by senior Maoist cadres in real estate. “He was in contact with senior CPI-Maoist cadres since 2008 and channeling their ill-gotten wealth into acquisition of immovable properties at prime locations in Giridih District of Jharkhand,” the Official added.

The arrested persons have been charged with supplying material for uniforms, shoes, wires, and walkie-talkie sets besides cash in lieu of being allowed to function as road contractors in the Bastar division. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), P. Sunder Raj, said that Nishant Jain, a resident of Bilaspur has been arrested for helping to provide material and other help to Maoists. The accused owns a contracting firm by the name of Landmark Engineering in Bilaspur and has nearly 25 Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) road contracts in Koylibeda, Aamabeda, Siksod, Raoghat and Tadoki areas in Bastar division. Earlier, in March, Police, during vehicle checking in Kanker District arrested one Tapas Palit, who confessed that he had been supplying the material to Maoists. Police said that this had been going for two years and the material was being purchased from Rajnandgaon. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) found that contractors Nishant Jain, and Varun Jain of Landmark Royal Engineering, Rajnandgaon secured road contracts and had, through their subordinates – Ajay Jain, Komal Verma and Tapas Palit, been supplying the materials to Maoists. As per the report, Krishna was arrested for playing a key role in supporting and furthering the activities of CPI-Maoist. Earlier, the Jogulamba Gadwala District Police registered a case against Bandari Maddileti, president of the Telangana Vidyarthi Vedika (TVV), on similar charges. Based on the incriminating documents seized from Maddileti's residence, the NIA registered a fresh case in 2019 and started investigating. Sundarraj said, "Based on information received, a team of District Reserve Guards (DRG) went to Peddakwali village and arrested Sumitra who was resting at her home. She will undergo the COVID-19 test and thorough health check-up will be done, till then she has been quarantined. As Sumitra has a history of suffering from tuberculosis earlier, the ‘senior commanders’ felt it was not safe for others if she continued to suffer from cold, cough, and fever. Hence, they suspended her." Sumitra was active for the past 10 years in the region and was currently posted as a member of platoon number 3 of company number 1 of CPI-Maoist, the IGP added.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sharath Chandra Pawar said that a team of Venkatapuram Counter Intelligence (CI) along with his station personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was conducting the vehicle checks on the outskirts of Alubaka village in Mulugu District on June 26 and found a person carrying a bag. “Growing suspicious over him, the Police took him into custody and searched his bag in which they found INR 17,40,000. On interrogation, he told the police that his name is Karam Jalapathi (30), a resident of Jarapally village of Usuru taluk (revenue sub-division) of Bijapur District in Chattishgarh State. He also added that he had been working for the Maoist party since 2006,” the ASP said adding that Jalapathi was on his way to hand over the cash to the leaders of the Maoist party. It is said that he had collected the cash from one Rajeshwar Reddy, who is working for a beedi leaf contractor Narayana Reddy. Following this, the Police had also searched the room of Rajeshwar Reddy at Bhadrachalam in Bhadradri Kothagudem District. “We have found revolutionary literature from the room of Rajeshwar Reddy. He also confessed that he had handed over the cash to Jalapathi to give to the Maoist leaders. Following this, we have also arrested Rajeshwar Reddy,” the ASP further added.

As per the report, the trio was arrested when they were about to leave for the Kanaudi forest to supply food material to the Maoists. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Anup Kumar, said that Saryu and his family have been providing shelter and supplying food material to CPI-Maoists for the last one decade. “Saryu also took part in a few major operations carried out by the banned outfit,” he added. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Shukla said, “a Police team was out of an anti-Maoist operation in the said location and sensing presence of security personnel the Maoists opened fire. The encounter lasted for about 30 minutes after which the Maoists fled from the spot. A search operation was initiated after the encounter and we arrested David who was injured and tried to run away but was caught after a short chase in Khobha village.” David – a native of Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra, was one of most wanted Maoists of newly formed MMC (Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh) of CPI-Maoist. An AK-47 rifle, three magazines, 54 live cartridges, one pistol, one walkie-talkie set, medical items and other items of daily use and Rs 772 cash was also recovered from his procession. An NIA official said, Gope, a resident of Gumla District, was arrested for his alleged involvement in converting extortion money into legitimate means using a dubious company. The case pertains to the seizure of INR 2.538 million from Dinesh Gope, the chief of PLFI. The money was about to be deposited in a bank in Ranchi by the associates of Dinesh on November 10, 2016, but four accused were arrested on the same day and the case was charge-sheeted on January 9, 2017, the official said adding that the NIA, after taking up the investigation of the case on January 19, 2018, arrested six more accused, conducted searches and seized properties worth INR 9 million lakh and other incriminating documents.

In one incident, Maoists exchanged fire with a team of Police in the forest near Thokkuguda village of Thiryani Mandal (administrative sub-division) in Komaram Bheem Asifabad District on July 14. No casualties were reported on any side and the Maoists escaped taking advantage of the dense forest. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishnu S. Warrier said, “around 10.30 p.m. on July 14, when Police parties were searching in Thokkuguda village, a Maoist Dalam (armed squad) carrying AK 47 and SLR weapons attempted to fire at us and we retaliated. As a result, the Dalam fled from the scene in the dark.” Following this incident, Police arrested a Maoist sympathiser – Kova Ananth Rao of Thokkuguda in Thiryani Mandal for sheltering the Maoist Dalam. According to the SP, Kova Ananth Rao gave food and shelter to the Dalam led by State Committee member Mailarepu Adellu alias Bhaskar. According to a Police official, Bheema, a resident of Konta and a Maoist ‘Jan Militia’ member, was arrested from a hospital in Konta following intelligence inputs. He was involved in triggering an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion near the CRPF Murliguda camp in the District on March 11, 2016, which killed two troopers. The in-charge Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), ATS, Deepan Bhadran said the trio have been identified as Samu Oraya, his brother Birsa Oraya and the woman cadre Badiya alias Babita Katachap. While Katachap was arrested from near Mahisagar in Dahod District, Samu Oraiyya and Birsa Oraiyya were arrested from Vyara town in Tapi District. They were part of the Pathalgadi movement in 2016 in Jharkhand which started primarily in Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) belt of Khunti and its surrounding Districts in Jharkhand, where the tribal population had erected huge stone plaques outside their respective villages which announced a restriction on entry of any 'outsiders' in their villages. “We have also collected literature related to CPI-Maoist. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on July 28, arrested Delhi University Professor, Hany Babu Musaliyarveettil Tharayil in connection with the Elgar Parishad case, in which 11 other activists and intellectuals are accused of conspiring with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) to foment violence in Bhima Koregaon village in Pune District of Maharashtra in 2018, reports Hindustan Times. According to an NIA official, the Professor was suspected to have close links with Maoist leaders and co-conspirators in the case, including activist Gautam Navlakha, scholar Anand Teltumbde and poet-activist Varavara Rao and that the agency had irrefutable evidence in the matter. The NIA spokesperson said the investigation revealed that senior leaders of CPI-Maoist were in contact with the organisers of Elgar Parishad, an event held in Pune on December 31, 2017, and attended by hundreds of activists -- and Babu to “spread the ideology of Maoism” and encourage “unlawful activities”.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on July 29, arrested three persons identified as, Laxman Jaiswal alias Laxman Sao (46), Ramesh Kumar Kashyap alias Ramesh Hemla (35) and Kumari Linge Tati (25), from Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh, in connection with the killing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Bhima Mandavi on April 9, 2019, in an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion carried out by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, reports Hindustan Times. The NIA Spokesperson Sonia Narang said the arrested persons were allegedly providing logistical support to the Maoists for carrying out the attack in which Mandavi and four of his security personnel were killed. The attack was earlier investigated by Chhattisgarh Police. The NIA took over the case in May, 2019 after which it arrested two persons, Bhima Tati and Madka Ram Tati – in April this year. The NIA spokesperson said “Investigation has revealed that arrested accused Laxman Jaiswal alias Laxman Sao, who runs a grocery shop in Nakulnar, provided electric wires, explosive substances, and other items for the IED blast carried out by CPI-Maoist cadres. In one incident, three Maoists, including two minors, were arrested after an exchange of fire between Security Forces (SFs) and Maoists in a forest near Tetam village under Katekalyan Police Station limits in Dantewada District on August 1. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava said, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local Police launched an operation based on a specific input that senior Maoists had convened a meeting of people from Tetam, Tela, Jiakorta and other villages in a bid to force them to observe the Martyrs Week (July 28 to August 3) in memory of their slain leaders. When the patrolling team was near Tetam, the Maoists triggered IED (Improvised Explosive Devise) blasts and opened fire on SFs that led to the gun-battle. When the gun fell silent, the SFs arrested Hidma Madvi (23), a ‘jan militia member’ along with a 15-year-old girl and a boy aged 16. Also, detonators, Maoist banners, fire crackers, medicines and items of daily use were recovered from the spot, the SP said adding that “the minor girl was part of the Chetna Natya Mandli (cultural wing of Maoists) while the boy was active as a ‘militia member’. All the three were allegedly tasked with arranging commodities of daily use for senior cadres, spreading Maoist propaganda, damaging roads and conducting reconnaissance on police.” In other incidents, two Maoists, identified as Mahesh Yadav (32) and Manku Modiyam (32) were arrested from separate places in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on August 1. While Yadav was arrested from Tindodi village under Bhairamgarh Police Station limits, Modiyam was arrested from Chilnar village under Bijapur Police Station limits in the District. A Police officer said, Yadav was involved in the killing of Policeman -Somaru Poyam and injuring his parents at their house in Matwada village on July 1. On the other hand, Modiyam was wanted for killing a Police official and snatching his AK-47 rifle in Pamalwaya area in the District in 2011.

As per the Police, the nexus between Maoists and cannabis traders came to the fore after the arrest of one Kolakani Kamesh from Maddigaruvu area in Gangaraju Madugula Mandal (administrative sub-division) in the District on August 5. “We always knew Maoists collect levy from ganja traders. Now we have come to know that they are into ganja cultivation too,” said Satish Kumar, Officer on Special Duty (OSD), anti-Maoist operations. Kamesh was arrested by Gangaraju Madugula Police on August 5, and INR 1,76,000 in cash, 24 kilograms of ganja, two steel carriages, 10 detonators, nuts and bolts were recovered from his residence. Kamesh, during interrogation, accepted that he had been working for Maoists for the last four years. According to Police, farmer Tulasiram Nayak received a call a few days ago asking him to pay INR 1 million. The caller while identifying himself as a Maoist told Tulasiram to fulfill the demand at the earliest, failing which he would face dire consequences. According to a press release issued by Gadchiroli Police, Goga carried a cash reward of INR 1.6 million on his head. “He joined the Naxal movement in 2007 and rose through the ranks very fast to become a DVC member in November 2018. Police arrested two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘commanders’ and seized 72 can bombs and four rifles, as well as a pistol and other explosives, in four separate raids in Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum, Khunti and Ranchi Districts of Jharkhand, reports The Telegraph on August 26. As per the report, the raids followed the arrests of Maoist ‘commanders’ – Jitrai Munda and Jogen Purty in Khunti District on August 23. They had during interrogation revealed the rebels’ plans to attack the Police and Paramilitary Forces in Kuchai in Seraikela-Kharsawan and Tamar in Ranchi District. The Seraikela-Kharsawan District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammed Arshi said, the Maoists had laid can bombs in large numbers at Raisindri hill in Kuchai to inflict casualties to the Police and Paramilitary Forces during their anti-insurgency operations. He said that apart from the can bombs, the rebels had also kept rifles and ammunition hidden in Jharjhara hills at Tamar in Ranchi district for use against the Forces. “Munda and Purty, whom the Khunti Police had arrested on August 23, had said during interrogation that Naxal leaders – Anal, Ashim, Amit Munda, Atul and Maharaja Pramanik are active in Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum and Tamar in Ranchi district, where IEDs had been laid. The duo had also pointed out the places where the rebel leaders had kept rifles and ammunition hidden. On getting the information, a joint team of Khunti, Ranchi, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan Police conducted extensive searches. By August 25 morning, we had found all the bombs and firearms the two rebels had spoken of,” said the SP. He further added that the Police had found seven can bombs weighing 5 kilograms each on a mud road at Meromjanga close to the Bandi hill in Kuchai and 65 can bombs weighing 4 kilograms each on a road along the Raisindri hill in Seraikela-Kharsawan District. The Police also recovered four rifles with 97 live cartridges and a pistol from Jharjhara hill in Tamar.

10 persons, including eight Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres and two Maoist sympathisers, were arrested and a cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from their possession at Bhainsakol forest in Munger District of Bihar on September 5, reports Outlook. According to Police, acting on a tip-off, the personnel of Special Task Force (STF) conducted a search operation in the said forest and arrested them. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Lipi Singh said, while eight of them are cadres of the CPI-Maoist, two others used to supply arms and ammunition to the Maoists. The STF personnel recovered two rifles, a pistol, 300 cartridges and 21 detonators from their possession, the SP added.

A cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was arrested following an exchange of fire with the Security Forces (SFs) near GochhapadaBireni forest at Phulbani in Kandhamal District of Odisha on December 20, reports Odisha TV. When the patrolling team was cordoning off forest area near Kasaram village, three cadres were arrested as they tried to flee on seeing the troopers, senior Police official Sunil Sharma said. Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including an ‘area commander’, were arrested from Kauwakhap village under Rafiganj Police Station limits in Aurangabad District of Bihar on December 30, reports Times of India. They were allegedly planning to attack a politician and target brick kiln owners for levy. They were identified as Suniljialias Sunil Lal Khatri (40), Ravi Ranjan Paswan (27) and Bhuwaneshwar Yadav (55). Among them, Ravi was active as an‘area commander’ of Goh in Aurangabad. Two single-shot Sten-gun and two live cartridges of 9mm and Maoist literatures were recovered from their possession.
