A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an exchange of fire between Security Forces (SFs) and Maoists in a forested area under Tarrem Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on January 19, reports NDTV. While the Maoist was shot dead by the SFs, a District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel was injured after he invertedly stepped on an Improvised explosive device (IED) planted by the rebels during the operation. “Multiple gunfights took place between SFs and Maoists in the forests under the said Police Station around 450 kilometers away from capital Raipur. The team included personnel from DRG, Special Task Force (STF), Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) personnel of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Force,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sundarraj P said adding that “following one of the encounters, the body of a Maoist was found from the spot while DRG assistant constable Jogeshwar Paikra suffered injuries in an IED blast.” The SFs also recovered a 12 bore gun, uniforms, IED, Maoist literature, etc. from the site. The identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained.

A constable of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), identified as Somdu Ram Poyam alias Mallesh, was hacked to death with sharp weapons by the cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Kotrapal village under Jangla Police Station limits in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on January 28, reports The Pioneer. The Maoists also set his body on fire after assaulting and hacking him to death. Poyam was a surrendered Maoist, who had joined the DRG after giving up arms in 2014. He had gone to meet his relatives in the village where the Maoists killed him brutally in front of his family.

A jawan(trooper) of the Special Task Force (STF) was killed when a pressure Improvised Explosive Device (IED), planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), went off in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 7, reports The Telegraph. The incident occurred around 4.30pm near Peddagellur village when a joint team of Security Forces (SFs) was out on an anti-Maoist operation. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar range, Sundarraj P. said, “When the patrolling team was on way back after the operation, constable Mohan Nag inadvertently stepped on the bomb, triggering the blast that left him critically injured,” he said. Later, constable Nag succumbed to his injuries.

A trooper identified as Kaner Usendi was hit by bullet in his stomach and he succumbed to his injuries. A head constable of the 22nd Battalion of Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF), identified as Laxmikant Diwedi, was killed when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), planted by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres,exploded in Pahurnar area in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on March 4, reports The New Indian Express. “A Joint team of Dantewada District Reserve Guard (DRG) and CAF 22 Bn were out on an area domination and for surveilling a bridge construction near Pahurnar across the Indrawathi river. He was abducted on March 20 evening and his slain body was found on March 21 morning near a rivulet close to nearby Keshkutul village. On March 22, a joint team of Security Forces (SFs) from Narayanpur and Dantewada District had launched an anti-Maoist operation along the inter-District border. The DRG personnel were returning in the bus to Narayanpur town on March 23 when the Maoists triggered three IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosions targeting the bus, which had around 25 personnel. A cache of arms and ammunition, including an AK-47 rifle, a 12-bore rifle, a 303 rifle, an 8 mm rifle, and some electronic items, was recovered from the spot. The C-60 commandos had received the information that Maoists are gathering in a large number in Tippagarh forest area against the backdrop of ''Naxal week'' being observed by them with the possibility of a planned ambush. “Gadchiroli Police's C-60 commandos conducted the operation on March 29 morning in Khobramenda forest area where they were attacked by 40 to 50 ultras. The exchange of fire lasted for two to two-and-a-half hours in which five Maoists were killed,” Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankit Goyal said. The slain Maoists included Rushi Raoji alias Bhaskar Hichami (46) of North Gadchiroli division carrying a reward of INR 2.5 million on his head. He had total of 155 offences registered against him, including 41 cases of murder, 78 encounters with Police and other offences. Other Maoists are identified as Raju alias Sukhdev Naitam (32) who was Tippagarh Local Organising Squad (LOS) deputy carrying a reward of INR 1 million on his head, Amar Kunjam (30), a Kasansur party member, who was carrying a reward of INR 200,000 on his head, and Sujata alias Punita Atram (38) and Asmita alias Sukhlu Padha (28), who carried the reward of INR 400,000 and INR 200,000 respectively. Several weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, were recovered from the encounter site, Police said. Sources said a Jharkhand Jaguar team was on a search operation in Saliya forest area, around 10 kilometres from Latehar District Police headquarters, when the JJMP extremists opened fire on them. During the two-hour gunfight, a Maoist was killed and Deputy Commandant Rajesh Kumar sustained bullet injuries, they said. Kumar was taken to Latehar and then airlifted to Ranchi for treatment. Dantewada's Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava said, the incident took place around 8.30 am when a joint team of various Security Forces (SFs) was out on a road security operation near Bodli camp, located over 400 kilometres from the State capital Raipur. A team of personnel belonging to the DRG, the Special Task Force (STF) and the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) had launched the operation on a hypersensitive patch from Bodli towards Kariametta village, he said, adding that about 650 metres away from the camp, Maoists hiding in a forest triggered an IED blast in which an assistant constable received minor splinter injuries. The rebels also exploded another command pipe IED in the area at around 10 am to target SFs, but the latter escaped unhurt, SP, Pallava added.
