Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including a bodyguard of Maoist-backed Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) chief Nachika Linga, were arrested during an anti-Maoist operation in a forested area, on the outskirts of Podapadar, in Koraput District on January 31, reports The Times of India. They were identified as Sarbu Wadeka, Wadeka Siku and Wadeka Jetu of Podapadar village in Narayanpatna block, police said. "Sarbu, Linga's bodyguard, was on our wanted list for his involvement in a series of Maoist offensives, including three murders. He was a key member of the Maoist outfit. No arm or explosive was seized from the trio at the time of arrest," said Koraput Superintendent of Police Awinash Kumar.

Seven Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were arrested in Odisha's Koraput District, on January 3 ( Feb 3), reports The Times of India. Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP), Avinash Kumar, said that the Maoists, belonging to Srikakulam-Koraput Division were arrested during a joint combing operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) in the forests near Murlaput, under Laxmipur Police Station. Two country-made guns, a camera flash, over 100 meters of wire, adopters, gunpowder and some Maoist literature were seized from them. The arrested cadres were identified as Sarbu Muniata, Suna alias Sona Wareta, Lati Hikoka, Jugal Mandingi, Iswar Hikoka, Deudu Hiniaka and Hari Miniaka.

Dandapani Mohanty, who acted as an interlocutor between the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and the State Government during the high profile abductions of the then Malkangiri collector R Vineel Krishna in 2011 and Italians Paulo Bosusco and Claudio Colangelo in 2012, was arrested by Police from his residence at Shanti Nagar in Berhampur in Ganjam District on February 8 on charges of being involved in extremist activities, reports The Times of India. "Mohanty was a logistics provider to Maoists," Director General of Police (DGP) Prakash Mishra told The Times of India hours after police took the convener of Jana Adhikar Manch (JAM) in custody. It may be mentioned that, in 2006, the state Government had outlawed Daman Pratirodh Manch headed by Mohanty on grounds that it was serving as a front organization of the CPI-Maoist. Justifying Mohanty's arrest, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (southern range) Amitabh Thakur said, "He was involved in at least 15 Maoist-related cases in Gajapati district. Of these, non-bailable warrants were pending against him in six cases."

A notorious Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Kastu Tadingi, wanted in three murder cases, was arrested by the Border Security Forces (BSF) personnel on the outskirts of Dumshil village in a forested area under Narayanpatna Police Station limits in Koraput District of Odisha, on February 22, reports The Times of India. Commenting on the arrest, District Superintendent of Police (SP), Avinash Kumar said "The arrested Maoist leader was in our wanted list for his involvement in 10 Maoist offensives, including three murders. We launched an operation following intelligence inputs of his presence in the area". Police said Kastu led the Narayanpatna unit of Srikakulam-Koraput joint division committee of the Maoists and was expert in making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), planting landmines and launching ambushes. Kastu was associated with Maoist leaders like Daya, Aruna and Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha (CMAS) president Nachika Linga.

The duo are contractors and close associates of Sangram Mohanty, the suspected Maoist who is currently lodged in a jail at Paralakhemundi in Gajapati District. According to Police, Palsu was a leader of Narayanpatna area committee of Srikakulam-Koraput joint Division Committee (SKDC) of Andhra Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of the CPI-Maoist. During interrogation he revealed that, was adept in making Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), usage of different weapons, planting landmines etc. He was close associate of Maoist leaders Daya, Aruna and president of Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) Nachika Linga, Police sources said.

In a joint operation, a team of Border Security Force (BSF) and Odisha Police arrested two Maoists, identified as Samuru Miniaka and Dalu Madingi, from a forest area under Narayanpatna Police Station limits on September 29. Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP) Awinash Kumar said "During interrogation the duo revealed that they were entrusted with the task of finding out vulnerable points to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) to attack security men patrolling the area. We have recovered a country-made gun from them." Police said the duo had initially joined the Maoist backed Chasi Muliya Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) and subsequently got arms training before joining Srikakulam-Koraput Divisional Committee of CPI-Maoist. Considered a senior member of the Kalinganagar Division of CPI- Maoist, Bhaskar was active in Keonjhar and Jajpur Districts. After being arrested for his involvement in Maoist activities, Bhaskar had served a four year jail term from 2009 to 2013 as an under trial prisoner. However, after his release, Bhaskar in association with leaders including Shekar, Mantu, Bikar and others had conspired to blow up the railway line near Tangiriapal railway station in Keonjhar District, Police said. Besides, he was involved in instigating tribals against the Government and collecting huge funds for Maoist activity. At the time of arrest, electric wire, detonators, gelatin sticks, pencils and batteries were seized from his possession.

The truck was carrying 17,000 kg of ammonium nitrate. As per initial investigation, the explosive material was to be delivered to someone in Koraput District. The seized material was packed in 340 gunnysacks each weighing 50 kg. Truck driver Siba Swain and helper Gajani Nayak were arrested by the Police. Siba is from the Semiliguda area of Koraput District and Gajani is from the Orkel area of Malkangiri District. Speaking to The Hindu over phone, Koraput Superintendent of Police Awinash Kumar said interrogation was on to ascertain who had sent the cargo from Andhra Pradesh and to whom it was sent. “We will take help of the Andhra Pradesh police,” he added.

Acting on a tip off, Koraput Police arrested Ara Praska, Satya Nachka and Chuda Naik from Ranjitguda forest under Laxmipur Police limits. "Wind machine, gun powder, metallic parts, cutting blades, hammers, sharpening instruments and ball pellets meant for manufacturing guns were also seized from them," said Superintendent of Police (SP) (Koraput) Awinash Kumar. "The guns were being supplied to cadres in Laxmipur and Narayanpatna," the SP said. In Malkangiri, Police arrested Era from Marigeta. "He was involvement in four incidents of violence in the district," said SP (Malkangiri) Akhileswar Singh.
