The Palamu Police arrested three persons and seized an 8GB memory card, containing key information about Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) from Palamu District of Jharkhand on January 18, reports The Telegraph. As per the sources, the three arrested persons have been identified as Akhilesh Yadav and Ajay Yadav, both brothers and residents of Aurangabad District of Bihar; and Mithilesh Yadav, resident of Lesliganj block in Palamu District. The trio was supposed to deliver the memory card to Maoists either in Saranda in Jharkhand or Chhakarbandha in Bihar. Police said the chip was handed over to Akhilesh by Ajay who got it from Mithilesh. Akhilesh is the younger brother of top Maoist Vinayji, the ‘secretary’ of Bihar Jharkhand ‘special area committee’ of CPI-Maoist. “The memory chip that was supposed to reach the Maoist top brass contains sensitive information about their sinister designs,” the Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashwani Kumar Sinha said, adding that the arrested trio had revealed that Maoists on the border of Bihar and Jharkhand were desperate to rear their heads again.

Armed cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) shot dead a civilian in Tuti Jharna village under Gomia Police Station limits in Bokaro District of Jharkhand on January 24, reports The Telegraph. The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Manjhi (60), a resident of Pindra village in Gomia Block (administrative unit) in the District. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Anjani Anjan, Manjhi was a Munshi (Clerk) of a contractor who is engaged in constructing a road from Pindra to Tuti Jharna village under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). As per the sources, the Maoists barged into the said village and set ablaze a JCB machine, one tractor and one motorcycle engaged in road construction work near the contractor’s camp and assaulted labourers. After this, they dragged Manjhi out of the camp and shot him dead. Before fleeing, the Maoists left posters stating their disapproval over the construction of the road and dictated the contraction firm to stop the work. The posters also alleged that the State Government was constructing the road to loot minerals from the area.

Four cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were arrested along with 100 rounds of 7.65 mm and 100 rounds of 0.315 mm ammunition and some Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] literature from Sarmali village in Seraikela Block (administrative unit) in Seraikela Kharsawan District of Jharkhand on February 12, reports The Pioneer. The arrested cadres belonged to ‘Maharaj Pramanik squad’ of CPI-Maoist, and were identified as Sagar Mahto, Jagdish Mahato, Abhishek Kumar Sinha and Gunlal Mahato. As per the report, Sagar Mahto is a resident of Bandhgaon under Kharsawan Police Station limits in the District and a special associate of Maharaj Pramanik. Jagdish Mahto is a resident of Sini Tola Palasdih in Sini area in the District. Abhishek Kumar Sinha hails from Harharguttu, Jamshedpur in East Singhbhum District and is an illegal supplier of ammunition. He is originally a resident of Bariarpur in Munger District of Bihar. Gunlal Mahato is a resident of Serengada in Kuchai Police Station limits in the District. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Karthik S., said: “We received information that Maharaj Pramanik is trying to get ammunitions and weapons apart from explosives and cylinders to inflict damage on Security Forces (SFs). Once specific input was received, a special team was constituted which arrested the cadres red-handed while exchanging ammunitions. The arrested people include one arms supplier, one middleman and two over ground workers (OGW).”

The cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) killed a civilian at Koplain Chowk under Kuchai Police Station limits in Saraikela Kharsawan District of Jharkhand on February 17, reports United News of India. The deceased has been identified as Durga Munda (26), a resident of Taramba village in Kuchai Block of the said District. The Maoists had left pamphlets on the spot in which they said Durga used to collect ‘levy’ in the name of the CPI-Maoist. The Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Rakesh Ranjan, said that the Maoists were executing such incidents in frustration due to the on-going anti-insurgency operations in the area.

Three women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)cadres were killed in an encounter between Maoists and Security Forces (SFs) at Chirung village under Gudri Police Station area in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on April 4, reports The Pioneer.West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said, "During the operation there were jawans (troopers) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s 170 and 60 battalions posted in West Singhbhum and 94 battalion from the adjoining Khunti district beside the district police jawans.The personnel rushed to the Chirung village by maintaining social distancing and encircled the village where about 25 rebels were holding meeting with the villagers. But as the police and para-military forces reached, the rebels started firing at the troops. After an initial exchange of fire from both the sides for about an hour, the naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] started backtracking and finally fled the scene." After the rebels fled the scene, the SFs carried out a search operation and found the bullet-ridden bodies of three women Maoists,beside those bodies were lying three rifles."During the search, we found over 500 rounds of bullets, arrow bombs, two IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), medicines, naxal literature from the scene, suggesting that the rebels belonging to Suresh Munda squad of the CPI-Maoist were at the Chirung village for motivating the villagers for joining the naxalism," SP, Mahatha pointed out.Intelligence sources maintained that the Naxalshave once again started influencing the local residents to come to the fold of the naxalism, said a senior intelligence officer. He said the rebels are targeting areas in Sonua, Goelkera and Porahat region of West Singhbhum.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Linda said,“the Maoists also triggered a low-intensity Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near the stone crusher, but no visible damage was done to the plant. We suspect top Maoists Nitesh, Abhijeet and Arvind from Bihar to be the brains behind the attack. Local rebel Sanjay Godram and his team carried out the arson.” Before fleeing the spot, the Maoists left pamphlets in which the rebels had written how smoke and dust from the stone-crushing plants were harmful for the labourers.

Three cadres of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including a woman, were killed while another was injured in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in Tabo Valley of Manmandubera forest under Tabo Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on May 28, reports The Times of India. Also, another PLFI rebel was arrested from the spot. The slain cadres were identified as - Patras (40), Dadu Nag (30) alias Champa da, and his 26-year-old wife whose identity is yet to be ascertained. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rajiv Ranjan Singh said, “Acting on a tip-off the Police and Paramilitary Forces launched a search operation at the valley at dawn and as the forces were advancing, the PLFI rebels opened fire at them. Soon the SFs replied the shots leading to a gun-battle. After the guns fell silent, the SFs started a combing operation during which they found three bullet-ridden bodies and one AK-47 rifle, live cartridges, explosives, and Naxal literature were from the spot.” The DIG further added that “An unidentified cadre who sustained injuries in the gunfight has been admitted to the government hospital in Chakradharpur while a fifth rebel, identified as Manoj, has been arrested.”

Police busted a Maoist hideout and arrested a Maoist following an exchange of fire in a raid conducted with the help of the CRPF in Giridih District of Jharkhand on May 31, reports The Times of India. Giridih SP, S K Jha said, “A hardcore Maoist Rakesh Marandi was nabbed (arrested). He was a member of a squad active in the bordering areas of Bihar and Giridih district. During interrogation, Marandi confessed to his involvement in attacking workers at a bridge-construction site in Baghmari and Chirudih under Bhelwaghat police station on April 27.” SP Jha further said, “The naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] hideout was busted at the foothills of Parasnath under Nimyaghat police station. According to the report, the Maoists held nearly 20 forest officials captive, snatched their mobile phones and also assaulted them. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Indrajit Mahtha said, “Around 100 rebels entered the forest department’s area at around 12 am. They held the 20-odd forest officials captive and blew up buildings of the forest department till 3 am.” The rebels pasted a poster in the site of the incident demanding the forest department to give forest dwellers right over the resources available in the forest, the SP added.
