An exchange of fire took place between cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and Security Forces (SFs) at Rajderwa forest area in Jhumra village under Chatrochati Police Station limits in Bokaro District of Jharkhand on February 2, reports The Pioneer. As per the report, on receiving a tip-off that a squad including women cadres of Maoist ‘commander’ Santosh Mahto alias Mithlesh Singh alias Durvodhan Mahto was camping in the area, the Bokaro Police along with the 26th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted a search operation. On seeing the SFs, the Maoists opened fire leading to a gun-battle in which a trooper of the CRPF, identified as Subodh Kumar, received bullet injuries, adds Indiablooms.

The Police in a joint operation with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) recovered landmines and weapons from a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) hideout at Sirinia village under Pipra Block (administrative unit) in Palamu District of Jharkhand on February 13, reports Outlook India. According to the Police, the joint operation was launched on the basis of intelligence input about the presence of Maoists in the said village. During the search operation, five landmines, four rifles, 40 AK-47s live cartridges, 20 metre wire and other things were seized. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) personnel later defused the landmines.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) at Kaththokwa forest under Bishunpur Police Station limits in Gumla District of Jharkhand on March 31, reports United News of India. As per the report, on receiving input about the presence of some members of Rabindra Ganjhu Squad of CPI-Maoist in the said forest, the Police initiated a patrolling. According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjani Kumar Jha, the Maoists opened fire at the Police team leading to a gun-battle in which a Maoist was killed whose identity is yet to be ascertained. Also, the Police recovered arms and ammunition from the incident spot and a search operation is underway, the SP added.

Three women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)cadres were killed in an encounter between Maoists and Security Forces (SFs) at Chirung village under Gudri Police Station area in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on April 4, reports The Pioneer.West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said, "During the operation there were jawans (troopers) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s 170 and 60 battalions posted in West Singhbhum and 94 battalion from the adjoining Khunti district beside the district police jawans.The personnel rushed to the Chirung village by maintaining social distancing and encircled the village where about 25 rebels were holding meeting with the villagers. But as the police and para-military forces reached, the rebels started firing at the troops. After an initial exchange of fire from both the sides for about an hour, the naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] started backtracking and finally fled the scene." After the rebels fled the scene, the SFs carried out a search operation and found the bullet-ridden bodies of three women Maoists,beside those bodies were lying three rifles."During the search, we found over 500 rounds of bullets, arrow bombs, two IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), medicines, naxal literature from the scene, suggesting that the rebels belonging to Suresh Munda squad of the CPI-Maoist were at the Chirung village for motivating the villagers for joining the naxalism," SP, Mahatha pointed out.Intelligence sources maintained that the Naxalshave once again started influencing the local residents to come to the fold of the naxalism, said a senior intelligence officer. He said the rebels are targeting areas in Sonua, Goelkera and Porahat region of West Singhbhum.

A tribal woman killed an ‘area commander’ of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Basant Gope, in a bid to protect her family from a group of rebels at Brinda village in Gumla District of Jharkhand on May 6, reports The Pioneer. According to Police, as many as six armed PLFI leaders barged into Vinita Oraon’s house and reportedly started manhandling members of her family, and Vinita attacked them with a sickle in an act of self-defense. The rebels fled after one of them –the deceased area commander– sustained injuries. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Hrudeep P. Janardhanan, said, “the insurgent, who was stabbed, sustained severe injuries. We found his body at a nearby forest during search operations.”

A cadre of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed while another was injured in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forested area near Benduchuan village under Jaldega Police Station limits in Simdega District of Jharkhand on May 17, reports The New Indian Express. As per the report, the incident took place when a team of Special Task Force (STF) was out on a search operation following an input that a group of PLFI cadres have been spotted in the area. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Kumar said, “One PLFI cadre has been gunned down by the STF while another member of the group, who claims himself as Area Commander of Bano area in Simdega, Praveen Kandulna, has received serious bullet injuries and has been rushed to the hospital.” The Police officials informed that five cadres have also been arrested and huge caches of arms and ammunition including one AK-47, four rifles, one county made pistol along with a huge number of live cartridges have also been recovered from their possession. The Identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained.

A ‘sub-zonal commander’ of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) identified as Nanku Ganjhu, was arrested along with an AK-47 rifle, 130 cartridges and two magazines from a forested area near Hossir village under Lawalong Police Station limits in Chatra District of Jharkhand on May 20, reports The Times of India. As per the report, Ganjhu had at least 10 cases registered against him in Latehar, Chatra and Palamu Districts. Giving details about the exchange of fire, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishav Jha said, “Police received a tip-off that some members of the group, led by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) zonal commander Paramjit, have escaped to Tikulia and Hossir villages after an exchange of fire with the Police on May 18 in a forest near Hossir. A joint team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the State Police, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bachandeo Kujur, carried out search operations for two days in the area. Also, another PLFI rebel was arrested from the spot. The slain cadres were identified as - Patras (40), Dadu Nag (30) alias Champa da, and his 26-year-old wife whose identity is yet to be ascertained. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rajiv Ranjan Singh said, “Acting on a tip-off the Police and Paramilitary Forces launched a search operation at the valley at dawn and as the forces were advancing, the PLFI rebels opened fire at them. Soon the SFs replied the shots leading to a gun-battle. After the guns fell silent, the SFs started a combing operation during which they found three bullet-ridden bodies and one AK-47 rifle, live cartridges, explosives, and Naxal literature were from the spot.” The DIG further added that “An unidentified cadre who sustained injuries in the gunfight has been admitted to the government hospital in Chakradharpur while a fifth rebel, identified as Manoj, has been arrested.”

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on June 2 carried out searches at the office of Ram Kripal Singh (RKS) Construction Private Limited located in Ranchi District in Jharkhand relating to a two-year-old Maoist terror funding case in the State, reports New Kerala. The case was originally registered at Dumri Police Station in Giridih District of Jharkhand on January 22, 2018, after the arrest of one Manoj Kumar with INR 600,000 in cash and incriminating documents. The NIA took over the case on July 9, 2018. It was alleged that Kumar had collected levy from contractors on the instructions of an absconding accused Krishna Da alias Krishna Hasda, a Jharkhand Regional Committee member of CPI-Maoist, the NIA said. During the investigation, it was revealed that Kumar was an employee of RKS Construction Private Limited Company and was acting as a conduit between the construction firm and the Maoists in Giridih District.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres exchanged fire with Security Forces (SFs) following the recovery of 60 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from two separate locations under Goilkera Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on June 12, reports The Times of India. The first recovery was made after teams comprising District Police, Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and a Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) stumbled upon a codex wire planted along the Kuida-Hatiburu road during a patrol. Upon digging out the area, 40 live IEDs, including can bombs and cooker bombs, planted in a series circuit, were recovered. The second recovery of 20 IEDs were made from Merelgora area in the District. While the SFs were busy removing the bombs, Maoists opened fire, resulting in retaliatory fire from the SFs, following which the rebels retreated. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said the search operation in the area was launched earlier in the day on a tip-off about the movement by Maoists in the forest cover of Goilkera and Sonua Police station areas.

Based on his revelations during interrogation, in another incident, the Security Forces (SFs) launched search operations in Masalia and Shikaripara Police Station areas in Dumka District and recovered one Self- loading Rifle (SLR), three INSAS rifles, one carbine, 357 cartridges and 1,675 detonators. In the third incident, five Naxals belonging to Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC) were arrested from Barkagaon Police Station limits in Hazaribag District. The arrested cadres were identified as – Somnath Sandil (20) Mahadev Gope (19), both residents of Gudri thana area, and Santosh Kumar Murmu (35) and Pandey Honhaga (23), both residents of Sonua in the District. The SFs recovered two country-made pistols, two magazines, 10 live cartridges, two motorcycles and four cell phones from their possession. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said, “acting on the information, we put up a checking point at a strategic place in Lodhai where forces belonging to CRPF’s battalion 60 were deployed. During the raid in the evening, four bike-borne men were about to cross the checking point, but at the sight of Police and Paramilitary Forces, they started running back. As per the report, the raids followed the arrests of Maoist ‘commanders’ – Jitrai Munda and Jogen Purty in Khunti District on August 23. They had during interrogation revealed the rebels’ plans to attack the Police and Paramilitary Forces in Kuchai in Seraikela-Kharsawan and Tamar in Ranchi District. The Seraikela-Kharsawan District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammed Arshi said, the Maoists had laid can bombs in large numbers at Raisindri hill in Kuchai to inflict casualties to the Police and Paramilitary Forces during their anti-insurgency operations. He said that apart from the can bombs, the rebels had also kept rifles and ammunition hidden in Jharjhara hills at Tamar in Ranchi district for use against the Forces. “Munda and Purty, whom the Khunti Police had arrested on August 23, had said during interrogation that Naxal leaders – Anal, Ashim, Amit Munda, Atul and Maharaja Pramanik are active in Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum and Tamar in Ranchi district, where IEDs had been laid. The duo had also pointed out the places where the rebel leaders had kept rifles and ammunition hidden. On getting the information, a joint team of Khunti, Ranchi, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan Police conducted extensive searches. By August 25 morning, we had found all the bombs and firearms the two rebels had spoken of,” said the SP. He further added that the Police had found seven can bombs weighing 5 kilograms each on a mud road at Meromjanga close to the Bandi hill in Kuchai and 65 can bombs weighing 4 kilograms each on a road along the Raisindri hill in Seraikela-Kharsawan District. On September 14 morning he was reading a newspaper at a tea stall of his village when hundreds of villagers with sticks started chasing him.
