When a team of the ITBP's 53rd battalion was out on an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation, triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in which head constable Anil Ekka sustained injuries. A ‘Jan Militia (people's army) commander’ of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Deva Muchaki was arrested by Security Forces (SFs) from Aalnaar village under Kirandul Police Station limits in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh in India on January 12, reports Devdiscourse. As per the report, Deva Muchaki was arrested during a joint search operation by a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local Police. A Police official said, “Muchaki is a ‘Jan Militia commander’ and has been with the CPI-Maoist for a decade. He was wanted for an attack in 2012 on a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) team in Kirandul in which six security personnel and a civilian were killed”. The official also added that Muchaki was part of a Maoist squad which set ablaze nine vehicles and machinery engaged in construction activity at the NMDC's Bailadila iron ore mine on November 24, 2019.

Maoists set ablaze vehicles and machinery engaged in road construction near Chidpal village under Tongpal Police Station limits in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on January 18, reports The Week. A Police Official said Maoists stormed a road construction site set on fire two trucks, a water tanker and a concrete mixer machine belonging to a private firm. “The work underway is part of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Despite the contractor being warned not to carry out work until adequate security is in place, he continued construction activities. His vehicles were seized recently for ignoring security warnings applicable to conflict-ridden areas,” the Official said adding that efforts are on to apprehend the Maoists.

A woman cadre of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forested area between Tekalgudem and Basaguda villages in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on January 19, reports The Hindu. As per the report, the incident took place when a team of 168th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a unit of its 204th CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) battalion and State Police were conducting an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation in the said area. After the exchange of fire, body of a female Maoist along with three rifles have been recovered from the spot, said the Officials adding that a search of the area is ongoing and the identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained.

Four cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were arrested from a forested area in Morpalli village under Chintalnar Police Station limits in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on January 20, reports The Pioneer. The arrested cadres have been identified as Madkam Kosa (20), Milkam Joga (22), Madvi Joga (27) and Barse Deva (20). They all have been active as ‘Jan Militia’ (Maoists’ people’s army) and as the members of Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangathan (DAKMS) of CPI-Maoist. As per the Police, they were arrested during a search operation and were allegedly involved in the attack on Security Forces (SFs) near Morpalli village in the District on October 8, 2019.

Three minor girls who were forced to join the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) had been rescued by Police during two separate anti-Maoist operations in Bastar Division of Chhattisgarh, reports The Times of India on January 27. In one incident, two girls aged 16 years each, were rescued from a Maoist camp by a team of Security Forces (SFs) during an anti-Maoist operation in the forests of Konanguda village in Sukma District on January 15. As per the report, the girls were undergoing training in the forests of Konanguda at a camp and were recruited by Maoist commander Kamla, Laxmi and Ramesh about two years ago. In another incident, Jagargunda Police rescued a 17-year-old girl during a search operation in Gumodi village of Dantewada District on January 20. According to the report, during a search operation, Police had spotted 2 to 3 ‘Jan Militia members’ in the area who, however, fled the spot on seeing the Police. When the search was intensified in the village, Police found one minor from the spot. The inspector general of Police (IGP) P. Sundarraj, said that the girl was recruited by Maoist commanders – Kesha and Hema Bhima.

Five cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including a minor, were arrested by Security Forces (SFs) from a forested area near Tetam village under Katekalyan Tehsil (revenue unit) in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 10, reports PTI. According to a Police Official, on receiving a specific input about the presence of the Maoists, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local Police initiated a search operation in the forest areas of Chikpal, Badegadam, Telam and Tetam villages in the District. The cadres were arrested from the latter village while they were trying to escape. Four of the cadres have been identified as Rahul Markam (22), Baman Markam (19), Mangal Madvi (20) and Mangu Madvi (40), while the fifth is a minor, said the Official, adding that they all were active as 'Jan Militia’ (Maoists’ people's army) members of CPI-Maoist.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed and a Special Task Force (STF) trooper was injured in separate encounters in Sukma and Narayanpur Districts of Chhattisgarh on February 19, reports The Pioneer. In the Sukma incident, the exchange of fire took place in a forest near Tondamarka village when a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on a counter-insurgency operation, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar range, Sundarraj P said. In another exchange of fire that occurred near Kasalpad village, one STF trooper was injured, he added. Police recovered a 'tiffin bomb' and live cartridges after an exchange of fire with the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Gumori region in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on October 21, reports The Pioneer. A joint team of Police and District Reserve Guard (DRG) that was on a search operation in Gumori region was ambushed by the Maoists, a Police press release said. While carrying out a search operation at the encounter site, Police recovered a 'tiffin bomb', codex wire, 10 live cartridges, Naxalite [Left Wing extremist, LWE] uniform, literature and other materials of general use including medicines. Police also spotted some blood marks, indicating some Naxalites were seriously hit or may have died, the press release added.

A District Reserve Guard (DRG) trooper was killed and two others were injured in an exchange of fire with the cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in the forested terrain of Orchha in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on October 24, reports The New Indian Express. A senior police official said, “There was a gun battle between the troopers and the Maoists in the forested terrain of Orchha on Saturday morning. One DRG personnel was killed and another two sustained bullet injuries. The incident occurred when a team of security forces was out on the search operation.”The Police believed that Maoists had suffered casualties although their bodies could not be recovered.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an encounter with Police in a forest near Kamalpur village under the Usoor Police Station area in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on November 3, reports The New Indian Express. When a patrolling team was cordoning off the forest near Kamalpur, Maoists opened fire at Police personnel, triggering retaliation. The Maoists soon escaped from the spot taking cover of dense forests along a hill, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar range, Sundarraj P, said. "During a search, the body of a Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE], two rifles, as many bags, Maoist literature and materials of daily use were recovered from the spot", the IGP said. The identity of the slain Maoist was yet to be ascertained, but prima facie it seems he belonged to Usoor LOS (Local Organisation Squad) of Maoists, the IGP added.
