The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested an absconding accused, Shihabudeenalias Khalid (39) in connection with the killing of police sub-inspector Wilson from an undisclosed location, oneindia.com reports on January 7. He is a resident of Chennai. The NIA said that the case pertains to the killing of special sub-inspector Wilson on January 8 2020 by terrorists-Abdul Shameem and Thowfeek, while the officer was performing his duty at the check-post along Kaliyakkavilai Market Road in Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu. The case was re-registered by the NIA on February 1, 2020 following which Shameem and Thowfeek were arrested. Islamic State (IS) linked operatives charged by NIA for murder of TN cop, Wilson Investigation found that Khaja Mohideen, Mahboob Pasha, Ejas Pasha, Jaffer Ali and Shihabudeen had hatched a conspiracy to carry out acts of terror. They were also in the process of procuring arms and ammunition to wage violent jihad, the NIA also said.

Uttar Pradesh (UP) Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) arrested a person named AzizulHaqaliasAzizullah, 35, from Sant Kabir Nagar District in UP while conducting a series of raids across five districts of UP on January 6, reports New Indian Express. While working on the inputs given by the national and international intelligence agencies, UP ATS arrested Azizullah in Kalilabad block of Sant Kabir Nagar. Azizullah, a Rohingya from Myanmar, had been staying in Sant Kabir Nagar for the last 19 years on fake documents. Moreover, raids were also conducted raids in Hyderabad, Mumbai and multiple locations across five districts including Basti in eastern UP and Aligarh in western Uttar Pradesh. The sources claimed that the ATS had also been looking to bust the terror funding network associated with Rohingyas in UP. During the interrogation, Azizullah disclosed that he had reached Indian border via Bangladesh in 2001. Posing himself as an orphan, Azizullah met one Inayatullah in Mumbai. Later, Inayatullah brought him to his father BadreAlam in Sant Kabir Nagar. Alam got Azizullah’s name registered for ration card. On the basis of which he was able to procure his Aadhar card and got the passports made, said the officer.

Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested two persons, an ex-serviceman and a Godhra-based woman, for suspectedly spying for Pakistan and sharing the Army's sensitive information with the Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), NDTV reports on January 9. The ATS made the arrest acting on a tip-off that an ex-serviceman, identified as Saurabh Sharma of Bahuni village under Bahadurgarh Police Station in Hapur District. On Sharma's information, an ATS team also arrested the woman, identified as Anas Gitauli, a resident of Panchmahal of Godhra in Gujarat.

Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested drug-peddler Parvez Khan, also known as Chinku Pathan, an associate of Dawood Ibrahim, in connection with a drugs case being probed by the ATS, an official said on February 2, reports NDTV. Chinku Pathan, was arrested in January, 2021 by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) from his home at Ghansoli in neighbouring Navi Mumbai after the NCB neutralised a drug syndicate suspectedly being operated by him. In a follow-up operation, the NCB seized a large quantity of drugs, unaccounted cash worth over INR 2 crore and two guns during raids at some places in Dongri and neighbouring areas in south Mumbai.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist, identified as Muneeb Ahmad Sofi, from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on February 4, after his deportation from Qatar, reports Zee News. While Lakhwinder and Satnam were arrested from Dullapur Keri village, Balwinder was arrested from Pakki village in the District. On the night of February 7 and 8, four Punjab based smugglers reached the suspects’ fields at Hindumalkot to collect a drug consignment from Pakistani smugglers. As the smugglers threw heroin packets from across the border, BSF personnel got sniff of it. The four allegedly fled with 5kilograms heroin from the spot. The Police claimed at least four suspected smugglers from Ferozepur and Fazilka Districts of Punjab had fled with 5-kilograms heroin. A packet containing 1kilogram heroin was found at the spot.Investigation indicated Lakhwinder facilitated the visit of smugglers from Punjab to his fields. On February 17, another person, Mere Khan, co-accomplice of Bachaya Khan was arrested in this connection. Both the accused were in touch with the international drug racketeers in Tarantaran in Punjab. The detectives of the Anti-terrorist Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh Police arrested a kingpin of Fake Indian Currency Notes racket (FICN) supplying counterfeit notes to his conduits in Noida on March 24, reports uniindia.com. The accused, identified as Sadar Ali, is a resident of Malda Town (Malda District) in West Bengal was carrying a cash reward of INR 25000 on his arrest. He was earlier arrested by Murshidabad Police in West Bengal in 2010 and fake currencies worth over INR 4,00,000 was recovered from him. According to an official communiqué of the ATS released on March 25, claimed that they have arrested two persons – Thesin Khan and Waseem Khan on November 1, 2020 from whom counterfeit notes worth over INR 5.97 lakh were recovered. The ATS registered a case and during interrogation, it was revealed that the high-quality FICN was brought by the accused from Malda Town by the kingpin Sadar Ali, who was active in the trade along with his wife Mumtaz. The cops named the couple as `wanted' and declared a cash reward of INR 25000 on the arrest of each of the accused. The ATS claimed that acting on a tip-off they arrested Sadar from Noida. He disclosed to have pumped FICN mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and in NCR region. Further interrogations are on with him in this regard.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) on March 28, said that it has arrested a wanted Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) racketeer Jakir Sekh in Siliguri FICN case on the same day, reports uniindia.com. According to NIA officials, accused Jakir Sekh, a resident of Bahargoria in Purba Bardhaman District in West Bengal, was a close associate of Bangladeshi FICN supplier Munshi. During the search at his premises, NIA seized two mobile phones. The case is related to seizure of FICN of face value INR 4,01,000 from the possession of accused Golam Martuja on January 8, 2020 by the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials at Siliguri. Later, NIA took over this case on March 9, 2020 and registered an FIR as RC10/2020/NIA/DLI. Earlier, the probe agency had filed chargesheet against four arrested accused persons before Siliguri Special NIA Court under sections 120 B, 489B, 489C of IPC and sections 16, 18 and 20 of UA(P)Act,1967, the NIA said, adding that the further investigation in the case to identify the transnational linkage has been continued.

Bhupendra alias Pravin Vanzara (26), Anil Khateek (22) and Ankit Pal (22), all residents of Amraiwadi in Ahmedabad, were arrested for setting on fire seven garment shops situated at AK Shah Building Complex and AMA Dharamshala in Revadi market area of Kalupur on March 20, 2021, Police said. While no fatality was reported in the incident, a loss of INR 54,00,000 was incurred by the shop owners. In April, 2021, Army officials were perturbed by a series of phone calls to their helplines in Siliguri, West Bengal, with unknown callers trying to inquire about army units and movements. Within weeks, the Army had traced the suspicious calls to a location in Bangalore. An investigation by Military Intelligence (Southern Command) in the city dredged up information that certain persons were exploiting the telecom system to carry out illegal activities. Sources say the suspects used telecom boxes and SIM cards to rout calls from terrorist groups.

He was arrested at the Delhi airport as soon as he landed at the airport from abroad. The ATS in a statement claimed that Surma is wanted by National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Punjab STF and is also reportedly involved in the “narco-terrorism” as he funded terror activities with the money acquired from the illegal drug smuggling. As per the details shared by the ATS, four cases were lodged against him between 2018 and 2021 in Gujarat and Punjab, following the seizure of 530 kg of heroin during that period from different parts of the two States. The NIA had taken over the probe into three of those cases, while one case is with the Gujarat ATS and he is wanted in all the four cases as one of the masterminds of drug smuggling racket in the country.

The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested two persons, identified as Rajender Singh Barnala (22) and Bablu Singh (30), both residents of Barwani District in Madhya Pradesh, who allegedly supplied illegal firearms to Khalistani militants and gangsters across Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and the national capital, Delhi, reports outlookindia.com on August 26. On August 25, Police got a tip-off that Barnala will come at Karala-Barwala Road in Rohini area in Delhi, along with his associate to supply illegal firearms to his contacts, a senior Police officer said, adding, that a trap was laid and the accused were arrested. Several mobile handsets and SIM cards were also recovered from them. Police said a total of 18 illegal pistols and 60 live cartridges were recovered from their possession. The Police had got inputs that Khalistani militants were in touch with illegal firearms suppliers of Madhya Pradesh, and it was found that the illegal weapon suppliers were active on social media platforms and the radical Khalistani groups and gangsters were also procuring weapons from them using these platforms, Police said. Barnala stated that he and his brother Narender Singh had been supplying firearms in various parts of country, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi for past several years. He and his brother also joined social media pages of Khalistan movements and different gangsters across the country. They were using virtual numbers and various apps to remain in contact with their receivers. Barnala's interrogation also revealed that he used to supply illegal weapons to Khalistani militants in Punjab. He disclosed that they used social media and app-based numbers so that their location could not be traced by the Police. The pictures, numbers and rates of illegal fire-arms were sent on different social media apps so that buyers can contact them, Police added.

Acting on a tip off by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the 153rd battalion of BSF that was in-charge of guarding the Gojhadanga border — one of the most sensitive Indo-Bangladesh borders, arrested him. NIA sources said that although Biswas was associated with HuT, originally, he is a member of banned Bangladeshi terror outfit, Jamaat-e-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). According to sources in the local Police, Biswas, a resident of Nagaon Purbapara in Satkhira District of Bangladesh, entered India illegally around eight years back. After that for some time he was hiding in Chennai and was working there as a civil contractor. NIA, came to know that Biswas along with some other people were planning a blast in a temple in Chennai.

On September 7, National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a Sri Lankan national, Arasaratinam Ramesh alias A Ramesh, for having links with Vizhinjam Arms case from Ernakulam District in Kerala, reports Zee News. The arrestee was September 8 produced before a special court at Ernakulam and later on sent to judicial custody. The Vizhinjam Arms case initially registered on April 5, 2021 was linked to seizure of illegal arms and ammunition from arrested accused aboard Sri Lankan fishing boat Ravihansi in the Arabian Sea. According to NIA, “huge quantity of narcotics drug was seized from Sri Lankan fishing boat in the Arabian Sea on March 25-26 this year. Upon investigation in the case it was found that the accused had illegally possessed five AK-47 Rifles and 1,000 9 mm ammunition”. Two persons were arrested earlier on May 2 in this connection. NIA further revealed that the arrestee Arasaratinam Ramesh is the brother of earlier arrested Suresh Raj and has been actively assisting him in the collection of arms, ammunition and drugs trafficking through international sea route. During as search operation, NIA had seized incriminating documents relating to the transactions of drugs and arms from the house of the Arasaratinam Ramesh.

The Delhi Police said that the group was planning to carry out major attacks in Maharashtra, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh during Navratri and Ramlila. "Interrogation has revealed that this module had received sophisticated RDX based IEDs, grenades, pistols and cartridges from a sleeper cell operative and these were sent to UP for safe concealment. Thereafter, underworld operative Jan Mohd Sheikh @ Sameer Kaliya along with Moolchand @ Saaju @ Lala were tasked by Pak-based Anees Ibrahim to receive the same in Delhi," the Delhi Police press release said. "The arrested have stated that there were 14-15 Bangla speaking persons in their group who might have been taken for similar training. It looks like this operation was closely coordinated from across the border. There were two teams, one was being coordinated by Dawood Ibrahim's brother Anees Ibrahim. The accused, identified as Jitender Singh, was apprehended from Bengaluru's Jolly Mohalla in Cottonpet. He is a resident of Rajasthan, the Police revealed. According to the Police officials, Singh was in contact with officials of ISI over WhatsApp. He used to send messages, make audio and even video calls with an unidentified officer. In what is seen as a case of national espionage, the accused even shared photos and details of the Army area and carried out reconnaissance of Army posts near the international border. Police recovered an Army Captain's uniform from Singh, which he used to impersonate an Army officer to move about army installations undetected. According to the reports, the photos of Barmer (Rajasthan) military station and all military vehicle movements were shared with the ISI officer.

He said that KNF is the oldest Kuki militant outfit and is currently under tripartite talks with the Governments under the banner of United People's Front (UPF) while adding that it had signed an extension of SoO recently with the Governments. "During interrogation when a photograph of an accused in the 2011 Delhi High Court blast was shown to him, he disclosed that he had done a recce of the High court. However, his involvement in the blast cannot be stated clearly. It will be clarified on further investigation. There is no evidence as of now," sources said. Apart from this, Asraf had also done a recce of the Police Headquarters (Old Police Headquarters) located at ITO. "He revealed that he has done a lot of recces but not much information could be gained as he was not allowed to stop outside the police headquarters for much duration. He had also done a recce of ISBT and information was sent to Pakistani handlers," sources said. It was also revealed by Asraf that he did a recce at India Gate and Red Fort as well. "He has said that he did a recce at 10 places," sources said. "In the interrogation, he said that VIP areas were not among the targets as casualty would have been less. All these recce were done a few years ago. He has not revealed as yet the places where he wanted to undertake a terrorist operation," they added. At present, the investigating agencies are interrogating him about whether he has been involved in any blast in Delhi. Asraf, a resident of Pakistan's Punjab province was held from Laxmi Nagar. Police had seized an AK-47 rifle from his possession among other things including a grenade and pistols.

A man, identified as Nibab Khan, has been arrested in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan for suspectedly spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), news18.com reports on November 29. agency ISI, Intelligence Director General Umesh Mishra said Khan ran a small shop selling mobile SIM cards in Jaisalmer and was spying for ISI for “a long time”. Mishra said Khan had gone to Pakistan in 2015 where he came in contact with an ISI handler. There he was given 15 days of training. While coming back to India, Khan started spying for the Pakistani intelligence agency. Mishra said the accused was passing on the information related to the local activities of the Indian Army to his handler through social media. Khan also used to provide OTP from Indian activated SIM cards using which the Pakistani handers would open social media accounts on the Indian phone numbers. Khan was also in touch with Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. He used to procure Pakistani visas for Indian citizens in lieu of a hefty amount. He used to receive money from his Pakistani handers through hawala (illegal money transaction) and other online transactions.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested one person, identified as Jaffar Abbas in Bihar's Gopalganj District in connection with a terror funding case, on December 8, reports NDTV. The agency recovered two laptops, six mobile phones and six SIM cards from the possession of Jaffar Abbas who was picked up from Manjhagadh Police Station area, Superintendent of Police Anand Kumar said. The NIA took him to New Delhi on transit remand." The NIA had intelligence inputs that Abbas was in touch with Pakistan-based terror outfits that are providing funds for carrying-out terror activities in India.

On December 12, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested an Afghan national, Sobhan Aryanfar from Neb Sarai in South Delhi in connection with the 3,000-kilogram Afghan heroin seizure from Mundra port in September, officials said, reports Hindustan Times. The drug haul, worth INR 21,000 crore as estimated by agencies, was the largest ever seizure by Indian agencies. A narco-terror link is being probed in the delivery as it was sent to India from Kandahar after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. “During the investigation, the arrested Afghan national was found to be involved in the conspiracy of transporting narcotic drugs concealed in import consignment of semi-processed talc stones originating from Afghanistan. Further investigation in the case is going on,” read the NIA statement.
