Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) announced that it would conduct a sit-in indefinite protest demanding separate Tipraland and scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Khumulwng in West Tripura District, reports East Mojo on January 2. IPFT party general secretary and Tripura forest minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia said that despite meeting Union home minister Amit Shah on various occasions over the demand to keep Tripura out of CAA, nothing concrete has come out till date. He stated that “We have been fighting for a separate Tipraland so that the rights of the indigenous people can be secured, but so far no positive response has been made by the Centre. The Centre has passed the CAA without exempting Tripura from the Act even after making a request to the Centre during the meeting held in New Delhi,”. He also said that the life of the indigenous people has been affected by the continuous influx in Tripura and any further increase of population in the state would be dangerous for the culture and tradition of the indigenous people who have already become a minority.

The Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) on January 6 started an indefinite sit-in at Khumulwng in West Tripura District against the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA), creation of a separate Twipraland and implementation of National Register of Citizens, reports The Telegraph. The IPFT said it will continue the demonstration at Dukmali Bazar at Khumulwng, Headquarters of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, till the Centre takes a positive step on these issues. IPFT president and state Revenue Minister N.C. Debbarma stated that “Several reports, some by the Centre, confirmed the presence of illegal immigrants in Tripura. In 1996, the then home minister Indrajit Gupta had said in Parliament that more than 8 lakh illegal immigrants are present in Tripura. Settling more illegal immigrants will be detrimental to interests of the indigenous people”.

More than 30,000 displaced Bru tribals from Mizoram will permanently settle in Tripura and a tripartite agreement was signed in this effect on January 16, reports The Telegraph. The agreement was signed by representatives of Bru and the central and Mizoram governments in presence of Union home minister Amit Shah. An agreement signed in July 2018 for repatriation of the Bru tribals to Mizoram did not materialise as majority of the community members refused to go back to Mizoram. Union Minister Amit Shah stated that “With the efforts of Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, NEDA convenor and leaders of Tripura’s political parties and royal scion Pradyot Manikya Deb Barman, the issue has finally come to a logical end,” He also added that “A 40x30 ft plot to build house, Rs 4 lakh as fixed deposit, financial aid of Rs 5,000 per month along with free rations supply for the next two years to all the Bru families. To build the house, an amount of Rs 1.5 lakh will also be provided to every family,”

Tripura unit of Amra Bangali, a Bengali political party, January 20 threatened a massive agitation if the government doesn’t fulfil its demands, including Bangalistan, a separate state for Bengalis, and exemption of the state from Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), reports The Telegraph. The party Tripura secretary stated that “During the period of insurgency in Tripura, and before that during Partition, a large number of Bengalis were affected. Many were rendered homeless. On December 10 last year, during a protest against CAA in Kanchanpur sub-division of North Tripura District, displaced Brus had attacked Bengalis after which some of them shifted to relief camps out of fear. Many people lost their properties but the government didn’t take any action against the culprits. To protect the interest of Bengalis, we need a land exclusively for Bengalis, Bangalistan. Bengalis are an integral part of this land and should not leave it at any cost. We shall not let any Bengali be excluded from this land.”

Over 11,000 Bru voters from six relief camps in Tripura will be deleted from Mizoram’s voter list, reports East Mojo on January 25. The decision was necessitated by the signing of a quadripartite agreement that gave the Bru people the right to permanently settle in Tripura. Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ashish Kundra stated that “The process of deletion is likely to be undertaken during the next round of roll revision after the Bru relief camps in Tripura are closed down. According to election officials, there were a total of 12,081 Bru voters in six relief camps in Tripura in the last Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian Parliament) poll held in April last year. During the last phase of repatriation conducted between October and November last year, 1,168 Bru people, comprising 715 adults and 453 children, belonging to 289 families, have returned to Mizoram.

Bru leaders on March 7 said that keeping Brus in different locations would cause socio-economic problems, reports The Telegraph. The General Secretary of Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF), Bruno Msha stated that they should be settled in cluster villages. He stated that “The convener of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Burman in a meeting and had decided to keep the Bru people in cluster villages. Deb agreed not to keep the Brus scattered because then there would be a problem for the state government.” The Telegraph adds that MBDPF General Secretary also added that “The Mizo people and the Nagarik Suraksha Mancha (NSM) are also not happy. They have organised so many agitations here demanding not to settle us in the subdivision. It is just after signing of the pact that a section of politicians with vested interest has started provoking the locals. The supporters of the NSM and the Mizo NGOs have alleged that trouble between ethnic communities and the Bengalis started in Kanchanpur since the arrival of the displaced Brus from Mizoram in 1997.” They alleged that residents of 13 villages, including 10 villages inhabited by the ethnic Bengalis at Kanchanpur and three Mizo villages in Jampui Hills (North Tripura District), were forcefully evicted by the Bru migrants. The NSM and the Mizo organisations want “the residents” rehabilitated there with proper package. NSM is a citizen forum for the residents of Kanchanpur.
