Bangladesh Minister of State for Water Resources Muhammad Nazrul Islam on October 7 said his country has a “zero tolerance” policy for dealing with militants and does not allow its territory to be used for insurgent camps, reports The Assam Tribune. The Minister, who was in Aizawl in Mizoram to attend a two-day international seminar, said that the Sheikh Hasina Government is taking serious steps against insurgents and terrorist groups that tried to use Bangladeshi territory as a “safe haven”. “Our forces have removed a number of insurgent camps from Bangladesh and leaders of the terrorist groups, including Assam’s ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom), were arrested and handed over to India,” he said. India and Bangladesh have agreed on issues like dealing with insurgents by signing an agreement for not allowing their territories for militant camps, he said. “Information sharing is extremely important for dealing with the insurgent outfits operating in the border areas,” he said. Islam said Bangladesh has trade links to Tripura, Assam and Meghalaya, but Dhaka wants “better connectivity” which will facilitate business ties with other Northeastern States, including Mizoram.

Leaders of the BRICS-BIMSTEC countries were on October 17 unanimous in condemning terrorism and supported India’s calls for intensified joint efforts to combat the menace, reports Financial Express. Myanmarese leader Aung San Suu Kyi said both groupings need to make partnerships not just for opportunities but for tackling challenges as well. “Our region is facing numerous threats, including rising terrorism and violent extremism,” she said, adding that one needs to explore causes of extremism which is root cause of terrorism. Condemning the Uri attack, she said, “We know too well the cost of conflict. We would like our world to be a kinder world.” “I have wanted my country to be a part of a more progressive world, not just a material world but a more progressive human world,” she added.Russian President Vladimir Putin, who did not speak about terrorism at the BRICS meet, came out strongly against the menace at the BRICS-BIMSTEC outreach meet. “We want to fight terrorism together. We will all collectively work on it,” he said.Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ also laid stress on countering terror and said, “We must fight terror on all fronts.” He also emphasised greater use of green and clean energy for development.Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing BRICS-BIMSTEC leaders on a single table. “We need to adopt technologies to cope with challenges of climate change,” she said. Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said terrorism remains a great threat to human peace. Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena said the centre of global power is shifting to Asia. Peace and stability in the region is an essential element of economic prosperity, he said.

India and Bangladesh on December 5 decided to strengthen anti-terror mechanism besides increasing cooperation to deal with border crimes, including smuggling of arms, narcotics and cattle, reports Indian Express. Growing activities of Islamic State (IS) in Indian subcontinent, increased presence of Jehadi groups in Bangladesh and sharing of intelligence also dominated the Indo-Bangladesh Home Secretary level talks held in New Delhi. During the meeting, the two sides discussed working of institutional arrangements, security related issues, cooperation in prevention of illegal activities along the borders, border management issues, an official statement said. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Mozammel Haque Khan led their respective teams in the talks. The talks were held in a cordial atmosphere and conducive to greater cooperation between the two countries, the statement said. Both sides flagged the menace of smuggling of cattle, narcotics and arms through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border and agreed to work together to check them. Bangladesh side requested for Indian cooperation in nabbing its most wanted criminals, especially those who were involved in war crimes and assassination of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Both sides exchanged notes about developments and investigations following the July 1 terror attack at a cafe in Dhaka. Bangladesh has been on edge ever since the terror attack.
