"A misguided quarter attacked the state institutions to thwart the nation's development. This misguided quarter wants to disrupt the stability of the country and push it backward using the name of Islam", she said. Calling the bombers and their masterminds as enemies of Bangladesh, democracy and development, she said: "I would like to tell you in clear terms to take all-out steps to bring the bombers and their patrons to book. Don't give them any concession… There is no question of general amnesty for the bombers."

On March 2, security forces reportedly arrested the Jamaa'tul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) chief, Sheikh Abdur Rahman, from his hideout at East Shaplabagh in the Sylhet city after a siege of more than 24 hours. "Sheikh Abdur Rahman along with two of his associates have come out of hiding and surrendered," said Lieutenant-Colonel Nurul Momen to Reuters. Earlier, while altercating with the security forces, Rahman said he would rather commit suicide than surrender and said he would not talk with anyone except State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and asked the law enforcers to contact him. Rahman's wife Ayesha, their two sons and two daughters had earlier emerged from the house after tear gas shells were fired. They were among nine people detained. Following his arrest, a home-made bomb, explosives, a detonator and some Islamic publications were recovered from the building, officials said.

According to Independent, the United States’ non-governmental organisation Peace Corps has decided to suspend indefinitely its programme in Bangladesh fearing attack on its volunteers by terrorists, after the arrest of five of the top seven leaders of the Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangaldesh (JMB). In a statement, the Peace Corps said that it made this decision following a careful assessment of Bangladesh’s prevailing security environment, and did not base its conclusions on any single threat or incident. "We have welcomed the capture of Abdur Rahman and Bangla Bhai of the Jamaatul Mujahidin as significant steps forward in the campaign against terrorism and extremism. Ironically, one consequence of that success is concern over possible reprisal attacks against Americans or other Western nationals by JMB activists still at large. The security situation in Bangladesh will be periodically reviewed to determine whether to end or continue the suspension", the statement added.

Bangladesh’s top Sharia-based commercial bank, Islami Bank, has denied it played a role in financing militants after regulators detected that funds had been transferred to suspicious accounts from its branches, according to Reuters. The Government has ordered a crackdown on sources of funding to thousands of Islamist militants, including members of two outlawed groups whose top leaders have been captured recently, in efforts to wipe out Islamist extremism in the country. The Islami Bank has come under the spotlight of the central bank’s anti-money laundering investigations, as it draws most of its capital from overseas Islamic institutions. "We do not support terrorist activities, and we don’t have any involvement with terror financing in any form," Abdur Raquib, Executive President of the Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited, told Reuters on March 21. The central bank had probed many of its accounts and the bank itself had conducted a separate investigation, he said. "We have suspended five employees including three branch managers and issued show cause notice to 15 others for their involvement in suspected transactions," Raquib added.

A US State Department announcement has apprehended that the target of new Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) attacks could be Americans, other Westerners or Bangladeshis and alerted all Americans in or traveling to Bangladesh to take extra care and precaution. "It remains unclear whether JMB, despite its recent setbacks, retains the ability to launch new attacks. The target of new JMB attacks could be Americans, other Westerners, or Bangladeshis", the announcement said. The US Embassy advised all Americans in or traveling to Bangladesh to take extra care and precaution while going out in public and to be cognisant of the current situation. "American citizens in Bangladesh should remain vigilant, especially if visiting courts or municipal government offices", it noted.

Independent reports that the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) chief Sheikh Abdur Rahman and his senior leader Bangla Bhai has disclosed to the Task Force Intelligence personnel that JMB cadres had received training in the use of fire arms, manufacturing and exploding of bombs at various mosques and madrassas (seminaries) across the country. The religious centers were used as training camps so that it would not arouse suspicion among people and the administration, the report added. They further disclosed that training camps are mostly located in the southwestern region and adjoining areas of the six divisional cities in the country. The districts where most of the training camps were located are Jamalpur, Tangail, Mymensingh, Netrokana, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Bogra, Khulna, Bagherhat, Satkhira, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Comilla, Brahmanbaria and in the cities of Chittagong, Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Sylhet, Hobiganj and Gopalganj. Intelligence agencies have also detected more than 700 madrassas and over a hundred mosques which were used as training camps by the JMB, sources added. A good number of mosques and madrassas, used as JMB training camps, were built through financial assistance of a foreign Islamist non-governmental organisation based in Kuwait.

"A 100,000 taka ($1,425) fine was imposed on the IBBL under the anti-money laundering act after we had detected some transactions by them in violation of banking rules," an official with the Bangladesh Bank told Reuters on April 6. "Although the amount is small, it is significant as the first penalty of the sort imposed by the central bank, which is investigating suspicious transactions in a number of banks," said the unnamed central bank official. A senior official of the Islami Bank had last week denied it had played a role in financing terrorists although central bank regulators detected funds had been transferred to suspicious accounts from its branches.

Police have arrested 17 people, including five teenagers, on terrorism-related charges, a senior Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer told a televised news conference in Toronto on June 3-morning, according to Dawn. All the men arrested were residents of Canada and most were Canadian citizens, said Mike McDonell, Assistant Commissioner of the RCMP. The 12 adults and five youths were reportedly of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin. McDonell said it was a "home-grown terror cell intent on launching attacks against targets in Southern Ontario" which would have been more devastating than the Oklahoma City bombing. "This group presented a real and serious threat. They had the capacity and intent to carry out a terrorist attack," he added. Police said they recovered three tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, a quantity three times the amount used by Timothy McVeigh to destroy the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995.
