The fate of three abducted foreigners allegedly abduct by a tribal armed group who are demanding TK nine crore as ransom remained uncertain. A manhunt for the hostages continued in the deep forest of Naniarchar under Rangamati hill district. Two Danish citizens and a British national were abducted by some tribal youth on the afternoon of February 16. Officials in Dhaka said the abductors, suspected to be from a tribal militant group who wants more autonomy for the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). However, none has so far claimed responsibility for the abduction.

Sheikh Hasina instructed negotiators to find a peaceful settlement to the issue. Unidentified tribesmen abducted the Europeans on February 16 in Rangamati hill district. The abductors, meanwhile, reportedly changed their hideout in the Kalapahar area, taking the hostages along with them. Also, security has been stepped up in Rangamati town after an anonymous caller rang up the police and threatened to bomb hotels where several foreign and local journalists are staying to cover the hostage crisis.

Bangladesh has rejected the Indian Supreme Court's comment that incidents of illegal immigration by Bangladeshis into India was increasing and they were posing a threat to the country's economy and security. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Abul Hassan Chowdhury told the BBC that it was not right to give a statement on the comment of a court of a foreign country. At the same time, he said no illegal infiltration by Bangladeshis into India had ever taken place in the past. On February 26, a three-judge bench presided over by the Chief Justice of the Indian Supreme Court made the comment during a hearing on a public interest litigation filed by an Indian national.

Five terrorists of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) were arrested in Muradnagar, Comilla district, on May 27. Police sources said the terrorists entered into Bangladesh through the Sylhet border and were on their way to the Khagrachhari hill district. Police also recovered a hand granade, some Indian currency and some pamphlets of the NLFT from their possession. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Syed Moazzem Ali told the BBC that this arrest proved that Bangladesh never allowed any Indian separatist group to operate on its soil and the authorities were exercising a lot of vigilance.

He said, "We have always supported any international initiative to combat terrorism." The Minister mentioned that Bangladesh has become a party to three UN anti-terrorism instruments in response to the recent call of the Secretary General. He added that Bangladesh have already initiated the process to become party to a few more anti-terrorism instruments. Referring to the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, Prof. Chowdhury said Bangladesh was encouraged by the leadership provided by the United Nations in mounting international support to fight against terrorism. On the question of Afghanistan, he said Bangladesh is genuinely concerned at the sufferings of the civilian population and added, "We are ready to commit ourselves in the event the United Nations is called upon to undertake any responsibility to restore peace and stability and carry out reconstruction work in Afghanistan." Bangladesh has already announced its decision to send humanitarian assistance worth Taka 50 million for the refugees and displaced people in Afghanistan.

The memorandum alleged that the group led by Proshit Bikash Khisha and Shanchoy Chakma is resorting to terrorist activities, including murder, abduction and extortion, in the hill tracts. It also alleged that terrorists belonging to the United Democratic Front (UDF) heightened their violence after the October 1 general elections. The PCP further demanded rescuing abducted PCP leaders and workers and the immediate arrest of the terrorists. Two PCP leaders were abducted from Murachhari Mahalchhari on October 7 and 21 respectively. Later on October 24 another PCP leader was abducted from Naryankhaiya Khagrachhari town.

The Taliban supporters might gather strength since they had their two Ministers in the Cabinet and were enjoying favour from the alliance government, Sheikh Hasina alleged.
