The Supreme Court (SC) on April 6 upheld its previous verdict on Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Senior Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, rejecting his plea for reviewing death penalty for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, reports The Daily Star. Kamaruzzaman was a key organiser of the infamous Al-Badr, the auxiliary force of the Pakistan Army, in Mymensingh District. On May 9, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) found Kamaruzzaman guilty in five of the seven charges brought against him and sentenced him to death in two charges, life term in two and 10 years' imprisonment in another. Kamaruzzaman appealed to the apex court on June 6, 2013, and the SC upheld the tribunal verdict on November 3, 2014, but commuted one death sentence to life term imprisonment. The JeI leader filed the review petition on March 5, 2014.

Bangladesh authorities ,on April 11 , hanged Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, third most senior figure in the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) hanged a top opposition leader for overseeing a massacre during the nation's 1971 independence war, reports The Dawn. Mohammad Kamaruzzaman was convicted for abduction, torture and mass murder. Law and Justice Minister Anisul Huq stated that “Mohammad Kamaruzzaman has been executed at 10.30pm Bangladesh time”. Kamaruzzaman is the second politician to be hanged for atrocities during the 1971 war. Earlier Abdul Quader Molla, Jamaat's fourth-highest ranked leader, was hanged in December 2013.

The Interpol list of wanted persons carried Jabbar’s picture with details about the war crimes convict. On February 24, International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) sentenced Jabbar imprisonment unto death for crimes against humanity which left 36 people dead in Pirojpur District in 1971. While delivering the verdict against Jabbar, the ICT-1 ordered the Police to arrest Jabbar with the help of Interpol.

The Prosecution on April 19 pressed five charges against eight Al-Badr men for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity committed in Jamalpur District during the Liberation War, reports The Daily Star. The charges include murder, abduction and torture. The crimes were committed in between April 22 and December 11, 1971 in Jamalpur District. The charges were brought for the eights' alleged involvement in nine criminal incidents. The accused are Ashraf Hossain (64), Professor Sharif Ahammed (71), Abdul Mannan (66), Abdul Bari (62), Harun (58), Abul Hashem (65), Shamsul Haque (75) and AKM Yusuf Ali, 83. Shamsul and Yusuf are in jail while the rest are absconding.

Prosecution witness in the trial of Obaidul Huq Taher and Ataur Rahman Noni, two alleged Razakar leaders from Netrakona District, on April 21 testified at the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1), accusing the duo for carrying out atrocious acts in 1971. Joynuddin (65), a boatman from village Gumria in Netrokona District, said “They nabbed my uncle Rishi Miah, who used to ferry refugees to India alongside me and my father on our boat. I quickly hide myself and follow the group as they led my uncle and Chanfar to nearby village Laufa. There they looted houses and set fire to those. They also abused women. They went to Pub Para and picked up Ruj Ali Talukdar, Jafar Ali Talukdar, Mosruf Ali Talukdar, Alam Khan, Sadek Ali and one Alauddin. They started to lead the abductees to Barohatta. On the way, Ruj and Jafar tried to flee but failed as Noni and Taher opened fire on them, killing them on the spot. They took the rest to Thakurkona Razakar camp and put them on immense torture. Razakars released Alam and Sadek on one condition of passing information on whereabouts of Freedom Fighters. Noni and Taher later shot at Alauddin, Mosruf and Chanfar, killing the first two on the spot. Chanfar managed to flee with gun wounds on his waist.”

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on April 22 asked the defense to submit a concise statement before it by May 20 on an appeal filed by condemned convicted war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) central executive committee member Mir Quasem Ali against his death sentence, reports New Age. The Appellate Division also asked the state counsels to submit their concise statement on the same appeal before the bench by May 27. On November 2, 2014, International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) sentenced Mir Quasem Ali to death after finding him guilty on two charges for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. On November 30, 2014, Mir Quasem Ali filed an appeal with the SC challenging the death penalty awarded by the ICT-2.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on April 22 concluded all proceedings in the war crimes case against Mahidur Rahman and Afsar Hossain Chutu of Chapainawabganj District and kept the case waiting for verdict any day, reports The Daily Star. Mahidur and Chutu, alleged members of Razakar force, were indicted on December 11, 2014, facing three charges committed during the Liberation War in 1971. Among the charges, two are related to killing of 28 people in separate incidents, while the other was related to looting and arson in two villages. The duo, along with other Razakars and Pakistani army, allegedly committed the crimes between October 10 and November 2 in 1971.

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on April 29 completed their primary probe against Habiganj District Razakar brothers Mohibur Rahman alias Boro Miah and Mozibur Rahman alias Angur Miah, reports The Independent. Mohibur and his brother Mozibur were arrested on February 10, 2015, soon after the tribunal issued arrest warrant against them. According to the investigation agency, the duo raised a gang of Razakars in Baniachang sub-District and established a camp in the locality. They raided the houses of Freedom Fighters and pro-Liberation people, carried out monstrous crimes like killing, raping, looting valuables and arson.

The tribunal found Forkan guilty in three out of five charges framed against him. Of the three charges, Forkan was given death sentence for the brutal rape and killing of the teenage Hindu girl, and the rape of the Muslim girl and killing of her father and two other civilians. He was given sentences of imprisonment for life till death for raping two Hindu women and forcing them to leave the country. Forkan was acquitted from the charge of killing four people, including two local Awami League (AL) leaders in Mirzaganj, and forceful religious conversion of three Hindu brothers in Subidkhali Bazar and their deportation.Forkan was an active supporter of the Muslim League (ML), an anti-liberation party in 1971. The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on August 5 fixed August 11 to deliver its verdict in the case against two Razakars, Sheikh Sirajul Haque alias Siraj Kosai and Khan Akram Hossain, for their brutality against the Hindus in Bagerhat District during the 1971 Liberation War, reports Dhaka Tribune. The court abated the third accused, Abdul Latif Talukder, from the charges as he died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in Dhaka city on July 28. The trio was indicted on November 5, 2014, on eight charges of crimes against humanity including genocide, murder, abduction and forceful conversion of Hindus into Islam. Of the charges, Siraj Kosai was indicted on four charges – for the killing of 600-700 Hindus in Rampal; 50 Hindus in Ranjitpur; abduction and killing of 19 people at Besargati and Kandapara; and the killing of seven people at Chulkathi. Two common charges were brought against all of them – for the killing of 47 people while one each against Khan Akram and Latif.

The accused are Ashraf Hossain (64), Professor Sharif Ahammed (71), Abdul Mannan (66), Abdul Bari (62), Harun (58), Abul Hashem (65), Shamsul Haque alias Badr Bhai (75) and SM Yusuf Ali (83). Of the eight, Shamsul Haque and Yusuf Ali produced before the tribunal. The rest of the accused are on the run and would be tried in absentia. The court released its full judgment, which commuted Sayedee’s death sentence to imprisonment until death, after the apex court’s five judges signed it. On February 28, 2013, International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT) sentenced Sayedee to death for killing Ibrahim Kutti and one Bisa Bali in Pirojpur in 1971, even though it had found him guilty on eight charges filed against him. On March 28, 2013, Sayedee filed an appeal with the SC seeking acquittal on all charges. The same day, the government submitted a separate appeal seeking Sayedee’s punishment on all the eight charges. The SC on September 17, 2014 announced a short order in which it commuted Sayedee’s death sentence to imprisonment until death.
