The Supreme Court (SC) on January 14 upheld the death sentence of former Jatiya Party (JP) leader Syed Mohammad Qaisar, for his involvement in crimes against humanity and war crimes -- including killing and rape - during the 1971 Liberation War, reports The Daily Star. The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on December 23, 2014, awarded death penalty to Qaisar for committing crimes against humanity in 1971 war. Later, Qaisar filed an appeal with the Appellate Division seeking acquittal of the charges in which he has been convicted and sentenced.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on February 19, granted conditional bail to war crimes suspect, Nurul Islam (60), of Moheshkhali upazila (sub-District) in Cox's Bazar District of Bangladesh, reports Dhaka Tribune. The three-member bench, headed by Justice Md Shahinur Islam, passed the order considering his health condition after hearing from prosecution and Defence. Earlier, on April 3, 2018, 17 suspects involved in war crimes from Moheshkhali, including Nurul, were indicted by the ICT on 10 counts of war crimes, six for genocide.

A Speedy Trial Tribunal in Rajshahi District of Rajshahi Division on March 15, handed down death sentences to four cadres of banned Islamist outfit Neo-Jamaatul Mujahidin Bangladesh (Neo-JMB) for killing a Hindu priest in Panchagarh District of Rangpur Division in 2016, reports New Age. The death-row convicts are Jahangir Hossain alias Rajib Gandhi, Alamgir Hossain, Ramjan Ali (arrested on February 26, 2016 from Panchagarh) and Rajibul Islam Molla. Among the death-row convict, Rajibul Islam is absconding. The tribunal also acquitted three other accused in the case, Harej Ali, Khalilur Rahman and Mohammad Rana, as allegations brought against them were not proved. Earlier as reported by SATP on February 21, 2016, Jogeshwar Roy (55), the chief priest at Sri Sri Swanta Gouria Monastery, was killed while he was conducting religious rites at the temple at Debiganj in Panchagarh District.

A team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on April 7 arrested Captain Abdul Majed, convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, near Gabtoli Bus Terminal in Dhaka city of Dhaka District in Dhaka Division, reports The Daily Star.Hours after his arrest, DhakaMetropolitan Magistrate Court sent Captain Abdul Majed to Dhaka Central Jail. Hemayet Uddin Khan, Assistant Public Prosecutor of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka, told, "Majed returned to the country on March 15 or 16 from Kolkata. He claimed that he had been hiding there for about 23 years." A CTTC high official, requesting anonymity, said during primary interrogation, Majed, the self-declared killer of Bangabandhu, told them that after returning home, he stayed in different houses, but had communications with his family. Majed was present at Dhanmondi Road-32 on August 15, 1975, when Bangabandhu and most of his family members were assassinated. After the killing of Bangabandhu, Majed performed his duties at the Bangabhaban and some other places as per the instructions of late Ziaur Rahman. The late President Ziaur Rahman's Government awarded the killers in many ways. Majed went into hiding after the Awami League Government came to power in 1997.

District and Sessions Court of Dhaka city on April 8 issued death warrant for Captain Abdul Majed, convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, reports The Daily Star. On November 19, 2009, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court verdict, confirming capital punishment of 12 people, including Majed, for killing the Father of the Nation and most of his family members on August 15, 1975. The death sentence will be executed between 21 and 28 days of its issuance. Majed, however, filed a mercy petition to the President, seeking clemency.

The High Court on December 7 directed the authorities concerned of the Government to immediately take necessary steps to ensure protection of all monuments and murals of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman across the country, reports The Daily Star. Earlier in the day, the Cabinet Secretary submitted a compliance report to the High Court bench through Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar, saying that the Government has established Bangabandhu's murals on the office premises of Muktijoddha Council in 380 upazilas (sub-Districts) of 63 Districts.

A court in Sylhet on December 13 sentenced Abdul Aziz alias Hanif, a leader of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), to life term imprisonment in a case filed over a series of bomb blasts in Sylhet city's Kadamtali Bus Terminal in 2005, reports The Daily Star. On August 17, 2005, as part of the countrywide series bomb blasts by JMB, bombs went off in 13 places of Sylhet District including the bus terminal, Sylhet court and other important places. In the blasts, no one died in Sylhet but 15 people were injured, including a judge of a speedy trial tribunal. The next day, 13 cases were filed by Police. In the case of Kadamtali Central Bus Terminal blast, Abdul Aziz was the lone accused.
