The Taliban strongly reacted to re-election of Ashraf Ghani as the President of Afghanistan, calling the election process as ‘fake and unlawful’, reports Khaama News Agency on February 18. Taliban, in a statement, said “Holding elections and announcing oneself a president under occupation shall never remedy the problems of our Muslim Afghan nation just as it has failed to do so over the past nineteen years.” Calling the re-election of Ghani as ‘unlawful’ and having no legal basis, the group further added that the announcement declaring Ghani as President ‘is also in conflict with the contents of the ongoing peace process while keeping in mind the current sensitive circumstances of the Afghan issue.’

On February 18, the Independent Election Commission (IEC), announced President Ashraf Ghani as winner of Afghanistan’s Presidential election, reports Tolo News. The final results of the election, according to the IEC, shows that President Ashraf Ghani has the highest secured 923,592 votes (50.6 per cent) of the total, followed by Chief Executive (CE) Abdullah Abdullah who secured 720,841 votes (39.52 per cent) of the total votes. The Presidential elections were held on September 28, 2019.

According to a decree issued by the Office of Chief Executive, Abdullah, imposed a travel ban on Chairpersons of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission. The decree also states that the travel ban is applicable on Secretariat Chiefs and the deputies of the two commissions, which bar the officials from travelling abroad.

Being one of the Presidential candidates in the election himself, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said, “We suggested that you (President Ghani) cooperate with us to resolve the crisis, but you (Ghani) chose the path of crisis”. Ashraf Ghani was announced the winner by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) amid controversy involving technical problems and allegations of fraud. The electoral crisis heightened after the final results were announced by the IEC on February 19 with both sides claiming victory. The former head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS), Rahmatullah Nabil, who also ran for president, said holding two swearing-in ceremonies is “dangerous” for the country and it will affect the morale of the Afghan security forces.
