On July 8, 2009, the Minister of State in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Ajay Maken, provided information on the Maoist violence and the Union Government’s efforts to combat it in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament). Presented below is the statement:

Government has adopted an integrated approach in dealing with Left Wing Extremists (LWE) activities in the areas of security, development and public perception. State Governments deal with the various issues related to naxalite activities in the State. The Central Government supplements their efforts in several ways. These include deployment of Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMFs) and Commando Battalions for Resolute Action (CoBRA); sanction of India Reserve (IR) battalions, setting up of Counter Insurgency and Anti Terrorism (CIAT) schools; modernization and upgradation of the State Police and their Intelligence apparatus; re-imbursement of security-related expenditure; filling up critical infrastructure gaps facilitating inter-State coordination; launching special intra-State and inter-State coordinated joint operations etc.
