The Police recovered three country-made pistols, two magazines, wire and explosives, the SP added.

Meanwhile, in a change of strategy, the CPI-Maoist has decided to call off violence against armed outfits, including their splinter groups, for three months, reports The Times of India. The Maoists have invited leaders of other groups to come together on one platform and fight against the unified command of the Centre and the State Governments carrying out Operation Green Hunt. Bihar Jharkhand North Chhattisgarh Special Area Committee (BJNCSAC) spokesman Gopal in a statement issued on June 24 said the decision of unilateral ceasefire was taken to invite the other armed groups working in individual capacity for the common people to work from a unified and stronger front. "We can set aside our personal differences in ideology for the betterment of common people and when the government is harassing villagers and trying to suppress their movement for neo-democracy, all the groups must understand the need of the hour and join hands," the release reads.

The appeal has been issued in the name of the People Liberation Front of India (PLFI), Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT), Jharkhand Janmukti Parishad (JJMP), Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), Shashtra People's Morcha (SPM) and any other such armed group working for people's cause. The release says, "If these groups are working for the common people, they must come on one platform and accept the offer for ceasefire because the government has intensified the imperialist attack to gain control over jungles, villages and natural resources to hand it over to the corporate houses. If these groups do not understand the urgency of unifying our resources to fight the common enemy, their stance would be exposed," the release reads.

Appealing to their own ranks and files to observe restrain, Gopal has asked the Peoples’ Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) cadres to abide by the diktat and refrain from attacking any member of the armed groups. "Our PLGA members must be vigilant and retaliate in case there is an attack but they have to avoid confrontation with the other groups during the period of cease fire," the release reads.

Maoists oppose Navegaon national park expansion in Maharashtra

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has slammed Maharashtra Forest Minister Patangrao Kadam for the plan to expand Navegaon national park, reports The Times of India. The Maoists have issued a pamphlet through the North Gadchiroli-Gondia division committee of the CPI-Maoist, which is controlled by the Maharashtra state committee. They have claimed that the ambitious project of extending the periphery of the national park would displace 30 hamlets in Deori tehsil (revenue unit) of Gondia District. Apart from opposing the national park expansion plan, the Maoists have also urged the elected representatives to resign from their posts as they have so far played an indifferent role in addressing the grievances of people who voted them to power.

Meanwhile, Police are alert due to the Maoist bandh (shutdown strike) in north Gadchiroli and Gondia Districts of Maharashtra along with Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh and Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh on June 25 to protest the Operation Green Hunt by Security Forces. “Today, Naxals blocked the road between Dhanora and Deori. We cleared it immediately," Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG, Gadchiroli range) Ravindra Kadam told The Indian Express. "We have told the shop-keepers in major business centres not to down shutters," DIG Kadam said.

Separately, concerned over mass resignations of panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) members in Gadchiroli District, the Centre has asked the Maharashtra Government to ensure safety and security of elected representatives from CPI-Maoist threats in the Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] hotbed, reports Business Standard on June 24. Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram spoke to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan recently and asked him to do the needful to protect the elected civic body members in Gadchiroli, many of who have put in papers after the Maoist intimidation.

Official sources said during last one month, two Gadchiroli zilla parishad (district level local self-Government institution) members from Etapalli tehsil (revenue unit) quit their posts following Naxal ultimatum. Four panchayat and one zilla parishad member in Bhamragarh in the District had also resigned from their respective posts. The sources said of late Maoists have abducted many panchayat or zilla parishad members in Gadchiroli and released them only after they agreed to abide by the Naxal diktats. The Maoists, they said, do not want any development in rural areas of Gadchiroli as under-development and lack of connectivity give them free run in these remote areas.

170 extortion complaints received in six months in Karachi

At least 170 complaints of extortion reported within a short span of six months have made the role of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) dubious, as Karachites are presently suspecting them for being pressurised by different political groups and remaining innocuous against extortion mafias, reports Daily Times. There is a massive increase in the extortion cases after the failure of LEAs in Lyari operation. According to official statistics made exclusively available to this scribe, some 39 cases of extortion were reported in January, 21 in February, 35 in March, 17 in April, 37 in May while 23 cases have been reported in June so far. Pakistan deliberately harassing our diplomats, says US

The United States (US) on June 24 said that Pakistan Government is "deliberately, willfully and systematically" harassing and obstructing American diplomats in the country, marking a new low in the already strained ties between the two nations, reports Times of India. The harassment and obstruction has increased dramatically and reached "new levels of intensity", said a State Department report, which has urged Washington to take the issue up at bilateral talks with Islamabad.

The Department's internal watchdog said the harassment of diplomats had heightened since the May, 2011 US raid on a compound in Pakistan that killed Osama bin Laden and rose further after November 26 NATO air strike killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, prompting Islamabad to block NATO supply lines into Afghanistan. "Official Pakistani obstructionism and harassment, an endemic problem in Pakistan, has increased to the point where it is significantly impairing mission operations and programme implementation," said an internal report of the US State Department office of Inspector General.
