The
Shillong Times reports that
Meghalaya Police commandos attacked
and destroyed one of the largest
militant camps belonging to the
Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA)
near Sobokgre village of East Garo
Hills in a fifteen minute encounter
in the morning of May 26. Commandos
on the search for the GNLA camp
came under sustained fire from ‘sentries’
positioned at lookout posts outside
the camp area just after 10 am.
The militants used heavy weaponry
firing several rocket propelled
grenades against the Police and
the commandos also retaliated with
2-inch mortars to blast their way
through. However, there were no
casualties from either the Police
or the militants’ side. “The camp
was almost like an entire village
closeted as can be seen from its
huge size. We believe it to be their
general headquarters and Sohan D
Shira was present in the camp during
the encounter,” said Police.
Meanwhile,
the Breakaway faction of the Achik
National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B)
has served a one-week ultimatum
on Garo Hills Autonomous District
Council (GHADC) Chief Executive
Member (CEM) Purno K Sangma to either
resign from the post or initiate
action to protect the interests
of the local indigenous people.
In a letter addressed to the CEM,
the (ANVC-B) asked him to either
prove his capability as the CEM
or resign on moral ground. According
to the ANVC-B, the GHADC led by
Sangma has failed to protect the
common interests of the people and
create avenues for growth of the
locals.
