Punjab Timeline - 2004

January 21

Three Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorists, Jagtar Singh Hawara, Jagtar Singh Tara and Paramjit Singh Beora, who are facing trial for killing the former Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, along with a murder accused in another case, escape from the high security Burail jail by digging a 94-feet long tunnel.

January 30

Punjab Police arrest Narain Singh Chaura, a Pakistan trained terrorist and the alleged mastermind behind the Burail jailbreak, from Mohali in Chandigarh.

February 28

According to Hindu, the Punjab Police, investigating the Burail jailbreak case, are said to have ascertained vital clues to a major revival plan by the terrorist outfits, BKI and the Panjwar faction of the Khalistan Commando Force (KCF). Apart from regrouping operatives, it is believed that they conspired to target some political leaders and former officers of the Army and Punjab Police.

March 10

A US court rules that Kulvir Singh Barapind, a Sikh terrorist, should be returned to India. Barapind, deputy chief of the Khalistan Commando Force, has been accused by India of murdering 52 people and injuring 13 during the time of terrorism in Punjab. The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals said that Baripand, who was arrested and detained in Los Angeles in 1993 on charges of having a fake passport, should be returned to India to stand trial.

March 30

Five terrorists affiliated to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) are arrested from the Goraya area of Jalandhar district.

April 29

Two Sikh terrorists, allegedly involved in cases of abduction for ransom and extortion across North India, and suspected to be having links with Europe-based Khalistan groups are shot dead during an encounter with the Inter-State Cell of the Delhi Police at Timarpur in Northern Delhi.

Three suspected Punjab terrorists are arrested at Durg in the Akola district of Maharashtra.

July 20

The Punjab Police seizes a large number of arms and ammunition from the border district of Amritsar. The cache included a rifle with a telescope, two Springfield rifles, two Carbines, two pistols of .410 bore, two rifles of .303 bore, three guns of 12 bore, pistol of 38 prohibited bore, four parts of guns which were being assembled, equipment for engraving the make and model of the weapons and a large quantity of cartridges of varied caliber. Three persons are arrested in this connection.

August 16

The self-styled chief of terrorist outfit, Khalistan Liberation Front (KLF), Harnek Singh alias Bhup, is arrested near Madhopur village in the Fatehgarh Sahib district.

August 18

According to annual report 2003-04 of the Union Home Ministry, Pakistan continues to provide sanctuary to various Sikh terrorist groups and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s external intelligence agency, was exerting pressure on these outfits to revive terrorist activities in Punjab. The report indicated that Pakistan continues to provide sanctuary to leaders of important pro-Khalistan outfits like the BKI headed by Wadhawa Singh, Khalistan Commando Force led by Paramjith Singh Panjwar and International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF) led by Lakhbir Singh Rode. Militant groups like Khalistan Zindabad Force led by Ranjit Singh alias "Neeta" and Dal Khalsa International led by Gajinder Singh also continued to receive sanctuary from Pakistani soil, the report said.

August 24

A BKI terrorist, identified as Gursewak Singh alias Babla, escapes from the Punjab Police custody at Bara Hindu Rao hospital in New Delhi while he was being taken for a medical treatment.

September 5

Punjab Police arrests five terrorists, including two suspected Pakistani nationals, from the Pathankot area of Gurdaspur district and recovered 15 kg of RDX, two AK-56 rifles, six magazines of AK-56 rifles, 170 cartridges of AK-56 rifles, 13 China-made .30 bore pistols with 325 cartridges, three time bombs, two HE 36 hand grenades, two grenade pins with fuse, seven battery bombs, five time pencils, two time devices, one underwater mask and Rupees 1.38 lakh in fake Indian currency from them.

September 8

Police stationed in the Tarn Taran district of Punjab seizes one AK-47 assault rifle from Didar Singh alias Dari, a BKI terrorist, who was arrested in connection with the murder of Baba Jagtar Singh, head of the Dera Akal.

September 21

The Punjab Police re-arrests BKI terrorist Gursewak Singh alias Babla from a hospital in the Raikot area of Ludhiana district. Babla had escaped from police custody in the national capital Delhi on August 22 while being taken to be produced before a court in connection with a 1998 case relating to sedition and violation of the Explosives Act.

September 26

Police in the Patiala district arrest a Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) terrorist, identified as Surinder Pal Singh.

December 26

The Punjab Police arrests a suspected Pakistani military intelligence agent, identified as Sunny Shairaj alias Rashid Massih, from Amritsar for allegedly e-mailing secret defence documents to his country.
